Khorasan carpet fragment
Iran or Afghanistan, early 19th century
Although pattern and style evolve with the passage of time, and patronage and market conditions change, the identifying features of certain carpet types remain constant throughout the centuries. This 19th-century carpet fragment consists only of borders from what must have been a very large carpet. Known to have been produced in Khorasan, and perhaps in the city of Mashhad, it contains jufti knotting, red outlining in the corner palmette, and orange and a blue-green among its many colors. These characteristics of 19th-century Khorasan carpets provide a basis for attributing 16th- and 17th-century carpets with similar features to that province, despite their stylistic differences.
