Khorasan tree design carpet fragment
Iran or Afghanistan, 17th century
Trees in full bloom fill the spaces between the slightly squared-off cartouches and lobed medallions in this carpet fragment’s pattern. The fruits of the pomegranate tree in the upper section were drawn and colored with care to expose the seeds. Although the sixteen known complete or fragmentary carpets with tree patterns were once attributed to northwestern Persia, the color palette and extensive use of jufti knotting link them to Khorasan production.
