1896

Myers purchases first Oriental rug, for dorm room

1902

Myers receives Master’s degree from Yale University, School of Forestry

1904

Myers works for U.S. Forest Service (1904-1906)

1905

Earliest recorded purchase of a Caucasian carpet in the Myers Collection

Carpet, East Caucasus, late 19th century. The Textile Museum R36.3.4, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1905

1908

Myers marries Louise Stoddard Chase on April 21 in Fall River, Massachusetts

1909

Myers’ daughter Persis Chase (d. 1958) is born in South Lancaster, Massachusetts

Earliest recorded purchase of a Central Asian rug in the Myers Collection

Chuval (bag) face, Turkmen, Central Asia, late 19th century. The Textile Museum R37.5.5, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1909

1910

Myers begins collecting classical carpets from Ottoman Turkey, Safavid Iran and Spain while continuing to add nomadic, village and workshop carpets from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Anatolia and Iran to his collection

1913

Myers’ daughter Mary Hewitt (d. 1959) is born. Myers and family move to their new house, designed by John Russell Pope, in Washington, D.C.

1914

Carpet, Turkmen, Central Asia, 18th century. The Textile Museum R37.5.2, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1914

1915

Myers purchases Augustus Saint-Gaudens medallion portraying Robert Louis Stevenson, a favorite author of Myers

Acquires adjacent house built by Waddy Wood at 2320 S Street

Torah curtain, Egypt, Cairo, early 17th century. The Textile Museum R16.4.4, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1915

1916

Daughter Louise Chase (d. 1960) is born

1918

Carpet fragment, Spain, Alcaraz, early 16th century. The Textile Museum R44.2.5, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1918

Carpet, West-central Anatolia, late 16th century. The Textile Museum R34.1.1, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1918
