Hanging, Peru, c. 1650-1700. The Textile Museum 91.504, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1951

Myers concentrates on collecting Indian textiles beginning in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s

Textile fragment, made in India, found in Egypt, Fustat, 18th century (?). The Textile Museum 6.152, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1950

1951

Myers begins acquiring Turkish silks late in his collecting and amasses his collection in the 1950s

Velvet cushion cover, Ottoman, Turkey, Istanbul, 17th century. The Textile Museum 1.54, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1951

Publishes first catalogue raisonné, Catalogue of Dated Tiraz Fabrics by Ernst Kühnel and Louisa Bellinger

1952

First of five annual loan exhibits at George Washington University Library

1953

Publishes second catalogue raisonné, Catalogue of Spanish Rugs by Ernst Kühnel and Louisa Bellinger

Myers acquires Mamluk carpets throughout the 1950s

1954

Publishes third catalogue raisonné, Paracas Fabrics and Nazca Needlework by Junius B. Bird and Louisa Bellinger

1955

Shawl, Peru, Highlands, 1460-1532.  The Textile Museum 91.594, acquired by George Hewitt Myers in 1955

1956

Myers’ interest grows to include Southeast Asian textiles in the 1950s

1957

Publishes fourth catalogue raisonné,Cairene Rugs and Others Technically Related by Ernst Kühnel and Louisa Bellinger

Myers begins to collect Sub-Saharan African textiles in the late 1950s

Myers dies on December 23, in Washington, D.C. The Textile Museum collection includes 4,600 rugs and textiles 

Mrs. Myers assumes duties of President of the Board of Trustees of The Textile Museum, serving through 1958
