Eleanor Bush Chucker, BA ’56, is serving her second term as president of the Western-Ellington Alumni Association.

In recognition of his outstanding achievement in the fields of petroleum products and lubricants, James H. O’Mara, BS ’57, MS ’61, received the 2001 George V. Dyroff Award from the American Society for Testing and Materials. O’Mara was a senior research chemist at Rohm and Haas prior to his retirement.

Richard Marks, MA ’58, recently completed his fourth tour aboard a U.S. Navy ship, where he teaches college courses in American government and introduction to management for Navy personnel. His most recent tour, aboard the USS Cleveland, took him from Hawaii, to East Timor, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Students receive college credit from the Central Texas College through the Navy’s Program Aboard for College Education.

The Washington University Medical Center Alumni Association’s 2001 Distinguished Service Award went to Robert M. Senior, MD ’61. Internationally recognized for his research in lung and cardio-respiratory diseases, Senior is a professor of cell biology and physiology at Washington University in St. Louis.

Robert R. Detore, BA ’67, was sworn in as mayor of the township of Verona, N.J., this past July. He is president and CEO of Correc-tional Health Services Inc.

Baltimore Magazine named Stuart A. Tiegel, BS ’69, one of the city’s “Top Mental Health Professionals” in its November 2001 issue. One of only 17 practitioners honored, Tiegel is an assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Logistics management executive William N. Farmen, MS ’71, is the new senior vice president and federal group director at VSE Corporation.

The new executive vice president and general counsel at ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc., in Costa Mesa, Calif., is Gregory Keever, BA ’71, LLM ’77.

The Bronx Historical Society honored Pat Martin, PhD ’72, as the first recipient of the Jonas Bronck award. Martin serves as chairman, president, and CEO of StorageTek, a digitized data storage company headquartered in Louisville, Colo. The award, named after the Bronx’s first European settler, recognizes Martin, a Bronx native, for his leadership and success.

Congratulations go to Joanne Glasser, BA ’73, on her appointment as president of Eastern Kentucky University. Glasser, a Baltimore native, is a former vice president of Towson University.

Silicon Valley veteran and entrepreneur Wil Cochran, MBA ’74, recently joined Atreus Systems Inc. as president and chief executive officer.

Twenty-year veteran of the National Park Service Robert J. Kapsch, MS ’74, MA ’78, was appointed National Park Service Senior Scholar on Historic Architec-ture and Engineering. Kapsch has received numerous awards over the years from the U.S. Department of the Interior, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the First Vail Award, and the Distinguished Service Medal.

A quarter century after receiving her first bachelor’s degree in classical humanities at GW, Deborah Carr Anderson, BA ’75, is pursuing another bachelor’s degree in photojournalism at the Newhouse School of Syracuse University.

A leading scientist at Hoffman-La Roche Inc. Philip Familletti, MS ’75, was promoted to vice president of discovery technologies, overseeing preclinical research and development.

Judith A. Gilligan Pace-Templeton, PhD ’80, was named assistant professor of biology at Hood College in Frederick, Md. Pace-Templeton, who has served as an adjunct faculty member at Hood since 1998, is a supervisory research chemist and chief of the Office of Product Development and Regulatory Affairs at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.

Grassroots Enterprise Inc., a provider of advocacy management software, appointed John Joaquin, MBA ’96, vice president of sales. An active member of the Washington, D.C., technology community since 1988, Joaquin is founder and chair of the IT Community Foundation, a group that links the technology and nonprofit communities, providing a catalyst for social investment in the greater Washington region.

Shang-Mei Lee, MS ’96, PhD ’01, was named assistant professor of management at Hood College in Frederick, Md. Her article “Price Dynamics Among Country Funds, The Underlying Stock Markets and the U.S. Market: Evidence from Cointegration and Causality Tests of Mexico, Korea, and Taiwan Funds,” was published in the April 2001 edition of the Southern Business & Economic Journal.

Nuance, a leader in Voice Web software, launched a Tokyo-based subsidiary in September led by Hideki Wachi, MS ’96. As president and representative director of the newly formed Nuance Communications K.K., Wachi will help drive the adoption of speech recognition software in Japan.

John Cosgriff, BBA ’97, was promoted to manager at Accenture Ltd, formerly known as Andersen Consulting LLP. Cosgriff lives in the Washington, D.C., area.

We unfortunately missed an opportunity to see the action, but when Sonia Ullah Klein, MBA ’98, was nearby filming “Manassas: End of Innocence” for Congaree Pictures, she called GW Magazine with an update. Following her marriage to fellow alum Michael Klein, the couple launched Congaree Pictures, LLC—a film finance and distribution company based in South Carolina. The production team for “Manassas” collectively holds five Oscars, three Emmys, two Platinum Records, and a Peabody Award. “Manassas,” narrated by Richard Dreyfuss, is slated to begin its run at the Manassas National Battlefield Park in 2002. One scene of the film features a cameo appearance by George Washington—in the form of a bust of the General lent by GW’s Alumni Relations Office! The University will be credited in the film.

Hood College of Frederick, Md., recently announced the appointment of Mary Ann Marvil, EdD ’98, as assistant professor of education and chair of the department of education.

Kelly L. Toscano, MA ’98, married John Bradley on May 26. She is an audiologist at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, N.Y.

After moving to Chicago following graduation, Phillip C. Klapperich, BA ’00, founded the House Theatre of Chicago, where he serves as executive director of the not-for-profit corporation. The theater launched its first production this past Halloween—“Death and Harry Houdini,” an all-original, vaudeville cabaret.
