Memory strategies
- Repeat saying the word you just learned
- Think about how a native speaker might say something and practice saying it that way.
Cognitive Strategies
- Pay attention to the pronunciation, grammar and word order during conversation.
- Prepare notes for the speech
Compensation strategies
- Look for a different way to express the idea, like using a synonym.
- Make up new words or guess if I don’t know the right ones to use.
- Use gestures and facial expressions if I can’t communicate how to express myself
- Try to speak clearly and loudly to make yourself heard
- Repeat what you want to say until the listener understands.
- Don’t mind taking risks even though you might make mistakes.
Metacognitive Strategies
- Before start speaking, think of what you know about the topic to brainstorm words for talking.
- Plan out in advance what you want to say.
- Notice using an expression which fits a rule that just learned.
- After speaking, rate how well you did.
Affective strategies
- Practice new grammatical structures in different situations to build the confidence level in using them.
Social Strategies
- correct yourself or others to help when making a mistake.
- Ask questions as a way to be involved in the conversation.
- Regularly seek out opportunities to talk with native speakers.
