Acknowledgements
James Bailey, associate professor of social and organizational theory, SBPM, presented a workshop about managing change to the Nestle Corporation in Lausanne, Switzerland, in October. Bailey also gave the keynote address at the American College of Greece and Pancypriot Alumni Association in Nicosia, Cyprus, in November.

Bernard Mergen, professor of American studies, CCAS, gave the keynote address, “If the Myth Fits: ‘The Misfits’ by Arthur Miller, John Huston, and History,” at the 27th Annual Turkish American Studies Seminar on “Myths and Legends in America” in Cesme, Turkey, on Nov. 7. He also lectured at universities in Izmir, Denizli, Van, and Erzurum as part of a State Department cultural program, Nov. 4–13.

Fernando Robles‚ professor of international marketing and international affairs, SBPM, had his new book “Winning Strategies for the New Latin Markets,” included in a December 2002 study of the market in Hispanic Business magazine.

Charles Toftoy, adjunct associate professor of management science, SBPM, was listed in the 2002 edition of America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals.

Stuart Umpleby, professor of management science, SBPM, presented the paper, “Strengthening the Global University System,” at the annual meeting of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy held in Timisoara, Romania, Nov. 10–13.

Akos Vertes, professor of chemistry, CCAS, presented the discussion “Large Ions in Small Droplets: Structure, Morphology, and Dynamics” at the meeting of the Greater Washington-Baltimore Area Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group, Columbia, MD. He also presented “Structure and Dynamics in Electrified Nanodroplets of Macromolecular Solutions” at the 2002 Meeting of the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS), Providence, RI.

Ryan Watkins, assistant professor of educational technology leadership, GSEHD, recently presented a lecture entitled “Assessment: A Tool for Evaluators” at the annual conference of the American Evaluation Association.

Appointments
Howard Eisner, distinguished research professor and professor of engineering management and systems engineering, accepted an offer to become a member of the board of trustees for the Center for National Software Studies, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to elevate software to the national agenda.

Gerald Kauvar, special assistant to the president, recently was nominated to serve on the United Way of the National Capital Area Board of Directors. His tenure on the board began Jan. 1.

Awards
Sarah Raful, Jewish student life coordinator, Hillel at GW, received the 2002 Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence award at the Hillel International Professional Staff Conference in Princeton, NJ.

Publications
Faye Moskowitz, professor of English and chair of the English department, CCAS, published “Peace in the House: Tales From a Yiddish Kitchen” (David Godine, 2002).

Mary Faith Pankin, cataloger, Gelman Library, published the article “The Yale Scientific Expeditions in Kansas” in the Fall/Winter 2002 edition of Heritage of the Great Plains, v. 35, n. 2.

Ryan Watkins, assistant professor of educational technology leadership, GSEHD, recently authored “The Relationship of Some Personality and Individual Characteristics with an Individual’s Commitment to an Ideal Vision for Performance Improvement” published in Performance Improvement Quarterly, v. 14, n. 3, pp. 118–133.
