SLAVIC 102: COURSE GOALS & POLICIES SPRING

In first semester Russian, you learned to: greet people and introduce
yourself and others, talk about languages and ethnic and national backgrounds,
talk about what and where people study, talk about daily schedules, make
and respond to invitations, talk on the telephone, read and write the Cyrillic
alphabet, master the basics of Russian pronunciation and intonation, understand
some elements of Russian culture and the transition from Soviet-era cultural
THIS SEMESTER, in Slavic 102, you'll learn to talk about your
homes (including dorm rooms and their furnishings) and the homes of Russians,
families and family members (including ages, professions, where people
were born and raised), buying things, asking for advice, going to a restaurant,
and talking about your hometowns. In addition, you'll read about the changes
in Russian commerce in the post-Soviet era.
NOTE: In addition to Golosa Volume 1, students in Slavic
102 are assigned readings in Genevra Gerhart's The Russian's World
(RW). This book is a required text in Slavic 203 and 204 as well, so you
will use it for 3 semesters including the current semester.
Next year, in second-year Russian (Slavic 203/204), you'll improve
your understanding of telephone etiquette and learn how to order overseas
calls, to ask for and understand directions for getting around town, to
describe the weather and talk about travelling, to talk about television
and movies, to express your likes and dislikes and agreement and disagreement,
to talk about books and authors and about your free time and hobbies (including
sports and music). You'll also learn to talk about health and illness (including
talking with doctors), holidays and holiday greetings, and deal with common
problems that occur when travelling abroad.
Successful completion of Slavic 204 or the equivalent with an average of B for Slavic 101/102 and 203/204 is the requirement for participation in the UW-Madison Study Abroad Program in Moscow. If you plan to take 2nd year Russian over the summer of 1997, you can apply NOW to participate in the study abroad program in the 1997-1998 academic year in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Note that 2nd year Russian will not be offered at Madison this summer, but there are other institutions where it will be offered. Ask your instructor for more information.
Note carefully the dates for quizzes, tests, and the final examination
as listed on this syllabus (which overrides any information as given in
the timetable). The final examination for this course will be on Friday,
May 16 at 7:25 pm at a place to be announced later in the semester. If
you miss a quiz, test or exam without a valid excuse, you will receive
a zero for this test.
Policy on Religious Holidays: If you will be observing any religious
holidays this semester which will prevent you from attending a regularly
scheduled class or interfere with fulfilling any course requirement, your
instructor will offer you an opportunity to make up the class or course
requirement if you make arrangements by informing your instructor of the
dates of your religious holidays within two weeks of the beginning
of the semester (or three days before any holidays which fall within
the first two weeks of class). Note: Passover Seders are Monday and Tuesday
April 21-22; Russian Orthodox Easter is Sunday April 27; Western Easter
falls within Spring Recess.
The course grade for this course will be determined according to the
Class Participation 20%
Quizzes, Dictations, etc. 10%
Unit Tests & Culture Presentation 15%
Final Examination 15%
Oral Examinations 15%
According to the policies of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, grades
for this course will NOT BE POSTED. You may learn your grade by using the
UW touch tone registration system and your personal identification number
(PIN) after the final grades have been submitted (within 3 days after the
final examination for the course).
Letter grades for unit tests, the midterm exam, the final exam, and the entire course will be assigned as follows:
92.5% and higher A
87.5% - 92.49% AB
82.5% - 87.49% B
77.5% - 82.49% BC
70% - 77.49% C
60% - 69.99% D
59.99% and lower F
Your instructor, in consultation with the course supervisor, may decide
to curve any test or exam if class performance indicates that the test
was too difficult (i.e., class scores are lower than expected). If a test
is to be curved, it will be curved before the assignment of the letter
grade (i.e., the percentage score may be raised as part of a curve, but
it will not be lowered).
* Class Participation will be graded on a daily basis according to the following formula:
5 points Present and Completely Prepared
4 points Present and Partially Prepared
3 points Present but Completely Unprepared
0 points Absent
Completely Prepared does not mean that the student can answer every question
correctly: it merely means that the student is prepared to attempt to answer every
question based on the previous evening's homework assignment.
Partially Prepared means that the student has demonstrated that she/he has not
completed the given day's assignment completely, although some of the
assignment was completed.
The lowest 3 grades for class participation will be eliminated in the grading
* Homework Exercises will be graded according to the following scale:
5 points Submitted on time and completed with good effort, at least 80% correct
4 points Submitted on time, less than 80% correct, more than 50% correct
3 point Submitted on time, but less than 50% correct
0 points Not submitted
No late homework will be accepted without a legitimate excuse. If you
know that you will have to miss class on a particular date, submit your
homework assignment in advance and you will still receive the homework
points for that day.
The lowest 3 grades for homework will be eliminated in the grading process.
The semester grade for homework will be the percentage of total homework
points earned (of the total homework points possible).
Homework Expectations: You can expect to spend 1-1.5 hours of
time on homework every weekday and 3-4 hours on homework on the weekends.
* The Quiz Grade will consist of the average of all dictations
and unit vocabulary quizzes as well as any other short quizzes your instructor
Dictations and Vocabulary Quizzes will be given for every unit
and your instructor will give you details about the format of these.
Compositions for completion at home will be assigned four times in the semester. Compositions will be graded as follows:
Communicative Content 40 points
Appropriate Lexicon 20 points
Grammatical Accuracy * 20 points
Syntax 10 points
Originality 10 points
* Grammar mistakes will only be penalized for those grammar topics presented
so far in the course.
* Unit Tests will be 50 minutes in length and will feature the following format:
Listening Comprehension 10%
Reading Comprehension 10%
Fill-in-the-Blanks } combined total
Translation (from English to Russian) } of 60%
Cultural Question (based on Russian's World) 5%
Communicative Writing Task (brief composition) 15%
The Culture Assignment is OPTIONAL and consists of a 5-10 minute
presentation (in English) on a topic dealing with some aspect of Russian
culture, history, politics, etc. (See below for further details.) If you
choose to do a culture presentation, it will count in the same grading
category as the unit tests. The presentations will be graded on a 100 point
scale as follows:
Thorough/Excellent understanding of the topic and good effort, 100 points
with visual displays for other students to see
Good understanding of the topic and good effort 90 points
Fair understanding of the topic and fair effort 80 points
Poor understanding of the topic and poor effort 50 points
* The Final Examinations will be 1 hour and 2 hours in length, respectively. Both these exams will feature the following format:
Listening Comprehension 10%
Reading Comprehension 10%
Translation (from English to Russian) 30%
Cultural Questions 5%
Communicative Writing Task 15%
* Oral Exams: There will be 2 oral examinations in the course.
Both exams will consist of a phonetics component and a communication component.
The phonetics component will be based on reading out loud, while the communication
component will be based on the role play situations like those in your
Attendance Policy: As you can see from the Class Participation
and Course Grading Formulas, attendance is very important to your success
in learning Russian in the course. You will be excused your 3 lowest class
participation grades (which could be absences) in the course grading process,
but no more.

Optional Culture Assignment
Prepare a brief presentation (in English) on one of the following topics:
1) Current Events: Read about current political, business/economic or social events and/or developments in Russia in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Time, or Newsweek and pick one issue (for example, the development of constitutional law in Russia, the rise of new Russian rock groups, conflicts concerning the development of natural resources vs. the protection of the environment, ethnic conflicts and tensions, nature of the new parliament, new urban planning, post-communist investment or any other topic cleared with your instructor) and trace it through articles published over the course of the semester. Prepare a presentation describing the developments related to this issue, citing what you read in the periodicals you examined. Photocopy all articles you read and cited in your report and submit them with your presentation. In your presentation, explain (don't read) what you learned about Russia today.
2) Film: Watch two Russian films from the video collection at LSS (excluding films shown in class) and prepare an analysis of what you learned about Russian culture in the two films. How does Russian culture differ from American culture, as demonstrated in the two films? In your presentation, explain (don't read) what you learned about Russia from the films: you may show one 2-minute excerpt as part of your presentation (not included in your time limit for the presentation).
3) Literature: Read a short work of literature by a Russian author: check with your instructor for suggestions. Prepare an analysis of what elements of Russian culture were illustrated in the text. In your presentation, explain (don't read) what you learned about Russia today.
4) Famous Figures in Russian Arts and Sciences: Pick a major Russian composer, artist, writer, architect or scientist and read a biography of this person. Write up a summary of this person's most significant contribution to the arts or to science. In your presentation, explain (don't read) what you learned about Russian arts and sciences: you may show photographs or play musical excerpts as part of your presentation.
5) History: Read a biography of any major political figure in Russian history (for example, any tsar or general secretary), and prepare an explanation of that person's significance for Russian history. In your presentation, explain (don't read) what you learned about Russian history. You may show photographs as part of your presentation.
6) Other: Pick another topic of your choice and clear it with your instructor. Your presentation must be based on the reading of (or viewing or listening ) a text written by or about Russians or Russian culture and civilization.
