CNN Anchor Lou Dobbs continued his national dialogue on the state of drug and alcohol abuse in the United States during a special live report at the Jack Morton Auditorium March 28. Tracy Downs, program director for the Building Responsibility Coalition at the University of Delaware, and GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg discussed efforts to curb harmful behaviors at the college level.

Major League Baseball’s first African American manager Frank Robinson was among several experts who celebrated the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s landmark integration of the professional sport during a GW ceremony on April 12. Frank Robinson, a Hall of Fame player, received the inaugural GW Jackie Robinson Society Community Recognition Award for his contributions to baseball and the nation.

Singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow helped spread an eco-friendly vibe during a special free Earth Day concert at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on April 22. The event, organized by Crow and fellow activist Laurie David, was part of a 12-campus “Stop Global Warming College Tour.” GW was the last stop for the group, which also featured Grammy Award-winning artists Carole King, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw in between short clips of Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer visited GW on Feb. 13 for a discussion about his first book Positively American. The event and book signing were hosted by the GW College Democrats and President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg.

As headliner of Colonials Weekend, comedian Jerry Seinfeld poked fun at everything from parenthood to prescription drugs during two sold-out shows at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on Oct. 20.

Actor Hal Holbrook performed his signature Tony Award-winning show Mark Twain Tonight! during GW’s President’s Night 2007 on Feb. 7 at Lisner Auditorium honoring major donors. During his visit, Holbrook also shared insights from his career in theatre, cinema, and television with master’s students in GW’s Theatre and Dance Department.

A speech by former Vice President of the United States Al Gore concluded a four-day environmental law conference hosted by GW Law School in March. “The Goracle,” as he is referred to by ardent fans, challenged the audience to “find the courage to make a difference.”
