GW Alumni Around the World

The GW Alumni Association trotted the globe this year, networking in various nations and establishing new international alliances for the University and alumni. GWAA currently has eight active international chapters throughout the world, including Hong Kong, Paris, and Brazil.

A highlight of the past academic year was the establishment of a new Association chapter in Beijing, China, in January. The chapter, which already has more than 65 members, held an inaugural celebration, attended by Dean Timothy Tong of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Bo Jin, MBA ’01, was elected president of the GWAA Beijing chapter. The new chapter will provide international networking opportunities for both students and alumni, and strengthen the University’s global presence.

“GW has many alumni located throughout Europe, South America, and Asia, and I am delighted that we have added a Beijing chapter to our array of alumni who are linked throughout the world,” said Scott Mory, assistant vice president of alumni relations and annual giving.

More than 30 MBA students helped to establish the Beijing chapter during a trip to China, which gave the students valuable experience in international commerce and culture. While in China, the students visited the headquarters of such corporations as Microsoft and Shanghai General Motors in order to learn about international business practices.

In other activities abroad this year, Mory hosted successful cocktail hours with GW alumni in London and Paris in September. Alumni gathered to network and reminisce at the Feria Café in Paris and in London at the Wine Wharf, a quaint wine bar that was originally built as part of the railway engineering works.

Also in September, GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and Dean Tong visited Taipei, Taiwan, where parents and alumni were updated on changes taking place on the GW campus.

In December, President Trachtenberg visited Hong Kong, where he greeted dozens of enthusiastic alumni, parents, and friends of the University at a lively Sunday brunch.
