Four alumni received the 2003 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award during GW’s Commencement weekend activities in May.

This year’s honorees were: Penelope Starratt Duffy, MA ’74, a leading researcher at the Mayo Clinic in neurological disorders of communication and a pioneer in recognizing and describing the effects of right hemisphere damage on cognitive processing and communication skills; Mark V. Hughes, BS ’69, MS ’77, a sector vice president and deputy manager for Science Applications International, a member of the boards of directors of Telcorida and AMSEC, and a member of the GW Board of Trustees; Marisa Rose Lino, MA ’72, a senior negotiator for the U.S. State Department’s Political Military Affairs Bureau and former U.S. Ambassador to Albania; Charles K. Watt, MS ’73, DS ’86, founder of Scientific Research Corporation, an electronic engineering company, and an advisory board member at numerous universities, including GW.

Colonials Weekend 2003 will feature the Colonial Lecture Series Saturday, Oct. 18. Enjoy these free lectures by some of GW’s most exciting faculty!

• “Cancer Research and Treatment—A Window on the Future,” by Steven Patierno, professor of pharmacology and genetics and executive director of GW’s Cancer Institute.

• The First Annual Kayser Lecture—“The Battles of Armageddon”—by Eric H. Cline, assistant professor of ancient history and archaeology in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

• “‘We Are All On Trial To Show What Democracy Means:’ Eleanor Roosevelt and the Struggle for Human Rights at Home and Abroad,” by Allida Black, assistant professorial lecturer in history in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

• “Current Issues and Developments in Corporate Governance,” by Krishna Kumar, professor of accountancy in the School of Business and Public Management.

• “Progress in the War on Terror,” by Ambassador Karl Inderfurth, professor of the practice of international affairs and director of the International Affairs Program in the Elliott School of International Affairs.
