Harold Gray, BA ’31, (pictured at left) received a ceremonial resolution from the Washington City Council declaring June 5 as Harold Gray Day in the District, in honor of his many contributions to the city. He is an advocate for better transportation and chaired several trade and civic organizations in the city.

William C. Martin, BA ’36, JD ’38, SJD ’39, is a certified circuit court mediator in Florida. He has been a practicing attorney for more than 40 years and also is a retired U.S. Coast Guard reservist.

Frank E. McAnear, BA ’45, BL ’49, and his wife were awarded the Baylor University “Pillar of Baylor Award” for teaching English and planning activities for more than 400 international students at the Waco, Texas, university. After retiring from a 30-year career as an attorney for the Justice Department, McAnear and his wife taught English as a Second Language at a theological university in South Korea. Upon their return in 1993, they began their teaching activities at Baylor.

The Presbyterian Congregation in Georgetown has honored Arma Jo Smith Northrup, BA ’47, for being an active member for more than 50 years.

After suspending his law practice, George Fuller, BA ’50, has been traveling domestically and abroad, including visits to China and Ghana. Fuller lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is involved in a number of volunteer activities. He has kept up speed skating and roller blading for exercise and has been taking some courses at the University of British Columbia.

Marjorie R. Townsend, BS ’51, who lives in Washington, D.C., recalls commencement as one of her fondest GW memories. She and her husband of three years were to be graduated together. Due to a mix-up at the gown rental shop, she was sent a Catholic University gown and graduated in bright yellow instead of the traditional buff and blue. Other fun memories include a questionable decision to take a surveying class during the winter semester, which she said required repeated visits to “a windy hill” off Military Road. And she was happy that Professor Ames never used her to “test” the 220 Volt circuit with her fingers, as most students who he employed for the task got “zapped.”

James D. O’Neal, BA ’53, MA ’58, (pictured at left) was recently honored by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names by having a place in Antarctica named after him. In 1956-57, O’Neal was temporarily assigned to Adm. Richard E. Byrd’s Office of Antarctic Programs as the official U.S. observer with the Chilean expedition performing geophysical studies in Antarctica. For his work there, O’Neal Point, located on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, was named after him. The subject of O’Neal’s master’s thesis at GW is “The Political Geography of the Argentine-British-Chilean Sector of Antarctica.”

Richard Marks, MA ’58, just completed his fourth tour aboard U.S. Navy ships teaching college credit courses in American government and governmental administration for onboard personnel.

Peter A. Gallagher, BA ’63, president and CEO of America’s Promise, was appointed one of five new board of directors members at VHA Health Foundation. The foundation is an Irving, Texas-based organization that promotes community-based health and well-being initiatives.

Ashok S. Kalelkar, BS ’63, former managing director and general partner of Seed Capital, has joined the board of directors of Cyota, a payment and security company based in New York.

Frank L. Riggs, MBA ’64, has won nine national media awards for a five-year marketing program for osteopathic medicine. The program included a 30-minute television documentary that is being used by private foundations in local markets nationwide. The program was featured in the national publication of the American Osteopathic Association.

ISC2 (squared), a nonprofit industry consortium dedicated to training and certifying information systems security professionals and practitioners, recognized Harold (Hal) Tipton, MA ’65, as the namesake of an annual award. The award recognizes the year’s top security professional at the InfoSec World Conference in Orlando, Fla.

Former Ohio attorney general and secretary of state Anthony J. Celebrezze Jr., MS ’66, joined Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter as of counsel in the government and regulatory affairs practice in the Columbus-based law firm.

John I. Blank, MBA ’67, has retired from Graybill’s Tool & Die, Inc. where he served as general manager in Manheim, Pa.

Robert R. Detore, BA ’67, (pictured at left) was elected Mayor of Verona, N.J. on July 1. He is president/CEO of Correctional Health Services Inc. He also is a member of GW’s National Council on American Politics.

Joseph P. Farina, BA ’67, was elected to the position of chair of the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. He will serve in this capacity through June 2002.

Mary H. Futrell, MA ’68, EdD ’92, has been elected to the Horace Mann Educators Corporation board of directors. She is dean of GW’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development.

Joel Alpert, BA ’69, (pictured at left) has been honored for his 25 years of distinguished service as a Reconstruction-ist rabbi in Philadelphia. He and nine other rabbis received honorary doctorates from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, Pa.

Poet Miriam M. Nathan, BA ’69, MA ’72, has been awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Recent poems of Nathan’s are included in Daughters’ of Absence: Transforming a Legacy of Loss, a collection of works by daughters of Holocaust survivors. Nathan lives in Maryland with her husband. They have three children.

Larry Hott, BA ’72, has been honored with a Massachusetts media fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Boston Film/Video Foundation. He is now co-producing three films for broadcast on PBS.

William P. Magee, Jr., MD ’72, (pictured at left) founder of Operation Smile, which aids children around the world with facial deformities, and his wife, Kathleen, were honored in April at the 2001 Common Wealth Awards of Distinguished Service. Hosted by PNC Financial Services Group in Delaware, the awards were first presented in 1979 to reward and encourage the best of human performance. The Magees joined four other 2001 award winners, including actor Morgan Freeman and biologist J. Craig Venter, whose company shared success in deciphering the human genetic code.

Mitchell E. Blaser, BBA ’73, has been appointed chief financial officer of Swiss Re’s Americas division, the company’s non-life reinsurance for all the Americas in Armonk, N.Y.

JoAnne K. Glasser, BA ’73, has been named the 10th president of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky. Glasser is an executive vice president at Towson University in Maryland.

Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. recently announced the election of Joseph W. Prueher, MS ’73, former U.S. ambassador to China and a retired Navy admiral, to its 12-member board of directors.

H&R Retail, a regional real estate services company with offices in Timonium, Md., and Chevy Chase, Md., promoted Scott Yurow, BA ’73, to principal. He has been with the company for five years and specializes in leasing retail properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Claude M. Kicklighter, MA ’74, a retired army officer, was sworn in recently as the assistant secretary for the Office of Policy and Planning at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington.

Michael R. Kirby, MA ’74, retired in November 2000 from the Internal Revenue Service after more than 33 years of federal service. He was a manager in the legislative affairs office, and he received the IRS Commissioner’s Award at his retirement. In February 2001, he became a special assistant to the chief financial officer of the District of Columbia.

John D. Klinedinst, MBA ’75, was recently appointed a trustee of Washington and Lee University.

She recalls one of her finest memories is of her GW commencement, when her son and daughter were present to watch Kossow receive her degree.

Col. John D. Pavlovsky, MSA ’80, has been awarded the U.S. Army Legion of Merit by the Department of the Army for meritorious service, completing 31 years of active duty. Pavlovsky was cited for leadership in battalion command during the Persian Gulf War and for outstanding achievements for strategic management of programs to re-engineer U.S. Army logistics processes. He now resides with his family in San Antonio, Texas.

After 20 years of service for the United Nations, Shun-Ichi Murata, MA ’81, Mphil ’82, PhD ’87, has taken a professorship at the School of Policy Studies in Kobe, Japan.

Lawrence D. Huebner, MS ’86, has completed his 10th year working for NASA at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. He recently was elected an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronau-tics, one of the greatest honors in the industry. Huebner has been working on the X-43 hypersonic demonstrator vehicle program.

Amy Ruth Cohen, BA ’88, married Martin Scott Kindler in Manhattan in March. Cohen trades financial contracts for the New York office of Banca Commerciale Italiana.

This award is the board’s highest honor in recognition of exemplary faculty achievement. Elfenbein is an assistant professor of history in the University of Baltimore’s Legal, Ethical, and Historical Studies program.

Jeffrey Goldfarb, BBA ’92, joined Reuters as a mergers and acquisitions reporter in New York City. He had previously spent eight years with the Bureau of National Affairs Inc.

Ian Kessler, MBA ’92, joined BCE Emergis in October 2000 as director of human resources for eHealth Solutions Group in Rockville, Md. BCE Emergis is a publicly-traded company on the Toronto exchange and is part of the Bell Canada family.

The winner of the Special Libraries Association Southern California Chapter’s sixth annual Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship, chosen from 15 applicants, is Aura Lippincott, BA ’92. Lippincott planned to completed graduate studies at UCLA’s information studies program in September 2001.

Susan Childers North, MBA ’92, and her husband Christopher celebrated the birth of their son, Christopher Colt North II on his father’s birthday, July 20th. Susan is an attorney with LeClair Ryan in Richmond.

Emily Cohen, BA ’94, has received her MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Cohen was part of a Wharton global consulting practicum, which worked with a team of Latin American business schools to design a market strategy for a Mexican company. She also served as a teaching assistant and participated in many school clubs.

Zethus Inc. in Washington, D.C., appointed Mike Conger, MS ’94, as one of the senior technical officials who will drive the launch of Zethus’ commercial real estate transaction platform to the Web. He is the vice president of development & technology.

Newton Gentry III, MBA ’94, is a new member of the board of directors of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. He is the area vice president for engineering services at Lucent Technologies.

George H. Brodie, MS ’95, has recently been awarded Engineer of the Year at the Navy’s David Taylor Research Basin, in Carderock, Md. Brodie was chosen from more than 400 engineers. He resides in Burke, Va., with his wife and newborn son.

Bernadette A. Boucher BA ’97, manuscripts librarian at Gelman Library, was curator of an exhibit called “Bright Stars Through the Perilous Fight: Men and Women Who Would be President,” in the library’s special collections department.

Niraj Sharma, MD ’97, married Tavi Shah at Nora Mayo Hall in Winter Haven, Fla. They now reside in Miami.

Robert G. Blatz, MBA ’98, was elected president and chief operating officer of American Land Lease in Clearwater, Fla. Blatz previously was the company’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Reade Kem, MA ’98, MBA ’98, joined Bank of America Securities’ High Yield Research group in New York where he is the junior healthcare analyst.

Jonathan L. Pompan, BA ’98, graduated from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Mo., on May 18, 2001. He was scheduled to take the Maryland bar examination in late July. He was also a legal intern at the Federal Trade Commission while in law school.

Nathan Colodney, MS ’99, is corporate director of information services for a major healthcare provider in New York City.

Alan Henney, MS ’99, a radio frequency expert, has become quite a media success recently, having been featured by the New York Times, Time Magazine, and the Washington Post and interviewed by Dan Rather and National Public Radio. His text on radio frequencies and related topics was a success, and a second volume is planned. Henney spends his summer tending to his family’s business in Rehoboth Beach, Del. He often can be found combing the beach with his metal detector and various radios.

TeraBurst Networks Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., a developer of switching systems for next-generation optical networking, appointed Dianne Denison, MBA ’00, vice president of U.S. sales.

Gregory Scott Weiss, BA ’00, is currently working at the Digital Media Association in Washington, D.C., as the director of membership.

Leslie B. Carlson, BBA ’01, who played basketball for four years at GW, played for Team USA in the 16th World Maccabiah Games in Israel this summer.

Lauren Ernst, BA ’01, was selected as first place winner in the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society’s 2001 best undergraduate honors thesis competition. She wrote her thesis on the interaction of the Supreme Court, the media, and the public and how the media and the Supreme Court influence public opinion.

David Holt, BA ’01, was hired as a personal assistant to the Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.).

Aviva Klein, MA ’01, (pictured at left) is the recipient of a congressional fellowship on women and public policy in Washington, D.C. She will serve as a professional staff member with legislative responsibility for women’s health, Social Security, and Medicare issues.

Elisha K. Rothschild, BA ’01, is teaching in the Durham, N.C., public school system as part of the Teach for America program, which enlists recent college graduates who commit to teaching in low-income public schools for at least two years.

Natalia A. Rudiak, BA ’01, recently completed a four-month internship for Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.).

Matt Taylor, MA ’01, recently received a prestigious Coro Fellowship, a full-time graduate-level program that matches its fellows with leaders of public affairs organizations for six short internships. Coro fellows work at each internship for approximately four weeks at a time, shadowing leaders in areas such as government, business, nonprofit work, labor unions, and political campaigns.
