Ship of Fools. 1962. Deep-bite etching in color.

This print was the first ambitious deep-bite etching that Wright undertook. It is loosely based on the late medieval satire by Sebastien Brant, "Das Narrenschiff" which inspired a number of early woodcut illustrators and engravers. Wright's print has no deep allegorical significance other than the picturesqueness of its idiosyncratic characters. Nevertheless, it was a considerable task for execution of both plate and viscosity printing in three colors.
