To support students with financial need who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen fields of study. GW will send up to three candidates to the national committee.


The amount of each Fellowship will cover tuition plus an $18,000 annual stipend to be allocated towards room, board and ordinary living expenses. The award is for the academic year of 2020-21.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be currently enrolled GW graduate students who are in any recognized field of study in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences (including law, medicine, engineering). Applicants must have an outstanding undergraduate record (i.e. 3.5 or above). The national selection committee has a strong preference for supporting scholarly endeavors. Students in Law, Medicine or in PhD programs are encouraged to apply. Candidates must demonstrate a need for financial assistance and must be a citizen of the United States of America.

Required Documents

(Please do not staple or submit double-sided materials. We will accept applications, resumes, essays and recommendation letters via email if preferred. Please see below for more details for each item. All other items must be mailed to our office or hand-delivered by the applicant by the deadline.)
  • Application (Can be emailed but must contain a handwritten or e-signature.)
  • Personal vitae or resume. (Can be emailed.)
  • All OFFICIAL undergraduate and graduate transcripts. (We will not accept unofficial transcripts, GWeb transcripts or transcripts from your school's admissions department. Please order new official transcripts for this opportunity if you do not have transcripts on hand. If you are in your first semester of graduate school, please send in a Confirmation of Enrollment, which can be obtained from the Registrar.)
  • A copy of your graduate exam test scores (if your academic program did not require graduate exam test scores at the time of application, please submit a brief summary stating as such to go with your application materials). Copies of scores forwarded from the Admissions department will not be accepted.
  • Two letters of recommendation. They must be from professors who have taught or worked closely with you. No exceptions. Letters for admission to graduate school are not acceptable. (Recommendation letters can be emailed by recommenders to but must be signed. Recommenders may also deliver their letters to our office via mail or campus mail.)
  • A Statement of Purpose up to three pages long (double spaced) which considers the relationship between your graduate level study and your intended personal and/or professional goals.  Your Statement of Purpose must include a 10-15 line abstract at the top (included in the three pages) that explains (in layman’s terms) the essence of your proposed topic of study or dissertation, the methodology of its treatment and its anticipated impact on your field of study.
  • A copy of your FAFSA. If you have not filed a FAFSA, please submit a brief summary stating why to go with your application materials.
  • A copy of your Financial Aid Summary.

  • A copy of your Federal Income Tax Return for the prior two years (including spouse's returns, if applicable). If you have not filed in the past two years, please submit a brief summary stating why to go with your application materials.
  • (Optional) Letter of recommendation from your Department Chair, Dean or Director (if your department does not have a Chair).

All materials (including letters of recommendation) MUST be received (not postmarked) by NOON on 10 January 2020 to be considered for internal review. No exceptions. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all required materials are received by the date and time of the deadline. If applicants are mailing in materials, they are strongly encouraged to have proof of delivery to ensure materials were delivered on time.
