Historical Resources

The University’s Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), housed in the Estelle and Melvin Gelman Library, is home to the University Archives and a wealth of resources on the history of GW and of the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The SCRC collects, preserves, and makes accessible the documents, photographs, and audio-visual materials that tell the story of GW and its place in the city.

GW Historic Walking Tour

This tour takes you to some of the most noteworthy buildings on GW’s campus, places where the traditions and rich legacy of GW have taken shape. The tour is also available via QR codes placed near each building’s entrance. When scanned with a smartphone with a QR code reader, these codes take you to a mobile website where you can learn about the buildings’ histories, view photos, and see a map of all tour locations.

GW Walking Tour in HistoryPin

Can’t make it to view the buildings in person? No problem! The SCRC has created a virtual tour for you on the website HistoryPin. It shows you historic photos in a modern day Google StreetView. Find the “Fade photo” slider on the right side of each page to time travel between yesterday and today. We’ve placed many more photos on the HistoryPin map as well, so explore the site if you’d like to see more.

GW and Foggy Bottom Historical Encyclopedia

This encyclopedia, created by the SCRC, provides a wealth of information about the people, places, and events that have shaped GW’s history since its founding in 1821.

George Washington University Historical Photograph Collection

This online collection of images contains photographs and negatives of individuals, localities, objects, buildings, events, and groups associated with the history of the University. It is one of the strongest photograph collections within the University Archives representing a photographic timeline of the history of GW from approximately 1859 through late 1980s.
