And now, lighter in texture and more peaceful, we hear the Prelude in A Major.

[orchestra plays]
[unknown speaker:]

And now Miss Helen M. Harris.

[Helen M. Harris:]

The young musicians to whom you are listening this afternoon, have been playing together as an orchestra for only three months. It is to the credit of their conductor, Edmund Zygman and of their own skills and enthusiasm that in so brief a time they have been able to achieve this nationwide broadcast. This is only a beginning. We believe they will go far. Youth in America today face many difficulties that darken their future. And our greatest handicap is our lack of opportunity to develop their powers. But the youth of America know that however discouraging the world may seem, they'll have a champion who has never failed them. Her courage, her sympathy, and understanding, and her steadfast support of the cause of youth have endeared her to young people throughout the nation. It is my privilege to present her to you now, the First Lady of this land, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who will speak to you from Washington.

[ER:]

Thank you, Miss Harris. I am particularly happy that the orchestra played the two pieces by Chopin because I think so many of us, when we studied music when we were young, loved those two particular pieces. And it took me back to the early days of my youth and I enjoyed them very much. I'm very proud of this orchestra, proud of the work which we have done through NYA and through WPA in giving people a chance to develop their own gifts and give pleasure to others. And I shall be extremely proud of the orchestra that finally goes to South America I hope, with some young artist from every state. I could not help thinking, as I sat here listening, of a day when I went, near St. Louis, Missouri, to a reform school for boys, and there NYA and WPA were cooperating to give the pleasure of hearing music and at the same time of learning about music uh to those boys. There was every kind of music that afternoon and a certain amount of instruction that I think it gave a great deal of valuable education. And to both organizations, I want to pay a tribute of gratitude for what they have done to widen the horizons of culture in our country. Thank you.

[Unknown speaker:]

Thank you, Mrs. Roosevelt. The next number by the orchestra is dedicated to Dr. Leopold Stokowski and his All-American youth orchestra which is being formed in cooperation with the National Youth Administration and will tour Central and South America. The orchestra plays a portion of a number by the American composer, John Powell, consisting of Virginia Country Dancers and entitled, Natchez on the Hill.
