GW Hosts Earth Day Gathering and Webcast

GW conducted a live Earth Day webcast on April 18, 2007, spotlighting practical solutions to global warming at colleges and universities across the country. The title of the webcast was “Chill Out: Campus Solution to Global Warming.” About 160 campuses in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Europe participated in the simulcast broadcast out of GW. About 100 GW students, faculty and staff gathered in the Jack Morton Auditorium for the broadcast, some of whom also participated in a reception after the broadcast.

Three sponsers of the broadcast were the Campus Climate Challenge, Earth Day Network, and National Wildlife Federation.

Each university participating in the simulcast was honored as a the winner of the National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Climate Chill Out competition, which was designed to identify and reward all the cool things institutions of higher learning are doing to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, the number one culprit of global warming. They are modeling exactly what the science says should be done. If every campus, business and organization in the country followed the example set by these universities, it would make a major contribution to solving the global warming problem and the environmental damage it is causing.

Participating universities are implementing projects that make a significant difference: covering roof space with solar panels to generate electricity; shifting from coal to local renewable sources of biomass to meet all campus electricity needs; meeting all campus heating requirements and saving a million dollars annually with geothermal energy; using real-time energy monitoring systems to help students and staff track and reduce energy waste.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, GW was selected to host this unique webcast because of its state-of-the-art broadcast production facilities and knowledgeable webcasting staff and students.
