GW Plans To Remain Open for World Bank/IMF Meetings

Community Must Carry GWorld Cards

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund have scheduled meetings adjacent to GW’s campus Sept. 28–29. Municipal officials say that as many as 10,000 visitors could be in and around Foggy Bottom from Sept. 27–30.

GW plans to remain open as scheduled with some possible minor changes to its normal schedule, says John Petrie, GW’s assistant vice president for public safety and emergency management.

“While we believe that the majority of guests, including protesters, will peacefully exercise their First Amendment rights, experience with similar meetings and our best advice from city and federal officials prompt us to take appropriate and reasonable measures at GW to safeguard the University’s community members and property,” Petrie says.

According to Petrie, all of the indicators point to protests that will be nonviolent in nature. He says, “There may be minor modifications to our normal schedule that will affect a small number of people and the need for folks to carry their GWorld cards will be real.”

A related city-wide demonstration is planned for Sept. 27 that is expected to disrupt traffic. Details on that demonstration will be provided separately.
