Iceland Native Earns Soccer Conference Honors
Mens Soccers Johannsson Records
11 Points in One Week
The Atlantic 10 awarded junior forward Arnar Johannsson Atlantic 10
Player of the Week for mens soccer earlier this month for his
outstanding play in George Washingtons first two matches of the
season.
Johannsson, who hails from Iceland, made the most of his new starting
role, recording five goals and an assist for 11 total points in two
matches at the DC College Cup. Johannsson scored the game-winning goal
versus Georgetown and added an assist as the Colonials won their season
opener over the Hoyas, 31. Johannsson followed up this strong
showing by scoring all four of GWs goals in a 40 route of
Howard on Sept. 1. His 11-point performance at the DC College Cup earned
him a spot on the all-tournament team.
McCalla One of 50 State Winners for 2002
NCAA Woman of the Year Award
Former GW gymnast Devin McCalla has been named the 2002 NCAA Woman of
the Year for the District of Columbia. McCalla is one of 50 state winners,
which will be narrowed down to 10 finalists later this month.
More than 340 student-athletes were nominated for this years award
by their colleges and universities. A committee comprised of representatives
from member schools selected the state winners.
While at George Washington, McCalla was named the Atlantic 10s
Gymnastics Performer of the Year in 2002 and was named the Performer
of the Week a record six times. She finished her career ranked 15th
nationally, all while earning Academic All-Conference honors. She was
the recipient of GWs Lynn George Outstanding Senior Female Athlete
Award in May.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors outstanding female student-athletes
who have excelled in academics, athletics, and community leadership,
and have completed their collegiate athletics eligibility.
Sports Communications Adds Two Staff
Members
Jeremy Sharpe and Lars Thorn have been named graduate assistants in
GWs sports communications office.
Sharpe, a 1999 graduate of Susquehanna, comes to GW from Edelman Public
Relations in Washington. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts
degree in communications.
Thorn, a 1999 graduate of the College of William & Mary, comes to
GW from Ignition, Inc., an event marketing firm that, among other projects,
organized the Olympic Torch Relay for Coca-Cola at the 2002 Salt Lake
City Winter Games.
In addition to assisting with all sports, Sharpe will be the primary
contact for mens and womens cross country, gymnastics, mens
and womens tennis, and softball. Thorn will serve as the primary
contact for womens soccer, mens and womens swimming
and diving, mens and womens squash, and baseball.
Cross Country Invitational Scheduled
for Sept. 28
The Colonials cross country team will host the annual GW Cross Country
Invitational Sept. 28 at Bull Run Park in Centerville, VA. The mens
run will begin at 9:30 am, followed by the womens competition
at 10:15 am. Head Coach Deb Canes teams will compete against American,
Gallaudet, Georgetown, Gettysburg, James Madison, Johns Hopkins, Loyola,
Mary Washington, Miami (Ohio), Penn State, Radford, Shippensburg, St.
Peters, Syracuse, Towson, and Virginia.
