Iceland Native Earns Soccer Conference Honors

Men’s Soccer’s Johannsson Records 11 Points in One Week
The Atlantic 10 awarded junior forward Arnar Johannsson Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for men’s soccer earlier this month for his outstanding play in George Washington’s first two matches of the season.
Johannsson, who hails from Iceland, made the most of his new starting role, recording five goals and an assist for 11 total points in two matches at the DC College Cup. Johannsson scored the game-winning goal versus Georgetown and added an assist as the Colonials won their season opener over the Hoyas, 3–1. Johannsson followed up this strong showing by scoring all four of GW’s goals in a 4–0 route of Howard on Sept. 1. His 11-point performance at the DC College Cup earned him a spot on the all-tournament team.

McCalla One of 50 State Winners for 2002 NCAA Woman of the Year Award
Former GW gymnast Devin McCalla has been named the 2002 NCAA Woman of the Year for the District of Columbia. McCalla is one of 50 state winners, which will be narrowed down to 10 finalists later this month.

More than 340 student-athletes were nominated for this year’s award by their colleges and universities. A committee comprised of representatives from member schools selected the state winners.

While at George Washington, McCalla was named the Atlantic 10’s Gymnastics Performer of the Year in 2002 and was named the Performer of the Week a record six times. She finished her career ranked 15th nationally, all while earning Academic All-Conference honors. She was the recipient of GW’s Lynn George Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award in May.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics, and community leadership, and have completed their collegiate athletics eligibility.
