Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgments

John Banzhaf, professor of law, discussed nonsmokers’ rights and the increasingly common practice of employers refusing to hire smokers on Fox’s Morning Show with Mike & Juliet June 19, and explained why many companies choose to hire only nonsmokers on the Fox News segment Just In June 20.

George R. Bozzini and Susan P. Willens, emeriti associate professors of English, taught a series of workshops on “Literature in English” at the first international EFL Summer Training Institute in Yakutsk, Sakha Republic, Russia, July 12-23. Willens lectured on “Poems and Stories in the Global English Classroom,” and Bozzini delivered a lecture on “Globalization and the English Language.” The institute was attended by 70 English teachers from the Sakha Republic.

Christopher Cahill, associate professor of chemistry, has been named a Fulbright Scholar for the fall semester. Cahill will study luminescent materials at Cardiff University in Wales.

Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, lectured on “Travel Writing in China” in conjunction with the exhibition Yellow Mountain at the Sackler Gallery of Asian Art July 19. Chaves’ translations of the poems inscribed on the exhibit’s 17th- and 18th-century Chinese paintings also have been placed next to the pieces.

Frederick Joutz, professor of economics and director of GW’s Research Program on Forecasting, testified before Congress’ Joint Economic Committee about skyrocketing oil prices June 25.

Dolores Stafford, chief of the University Police Department, was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumni Award June 14 at Mansfield University’s Alumni Weekend 2008.

Igor Strakovsky, associate research professor of physics, was selected as a regional award winner and one of 15 national finalists for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars’ Inspire Integrity Awards, the only national student-nominated faculty awards program.

Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, GW president emeritus and university professor of public service, was awarded the Honorary Legion of Honor of the Order of DeMolay by the Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay Aug. 10 at the Naval Masonic Hall in Washington, D.C.

Appointments

Mike Bozeman was named head coach of GW’s women’s basketball team. Bozeman was the team’s assistant coach for the past three seasons.
Chris Kojm, professor of the practice of international affairs and director of GW’s U.S. Foreign Policy Summer Institute, was named director of the Master of International Policy and Practice program at GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs.

Jennie C. Meade, director of special collections at GW’s Jacob Burns Library, wrote the introduction to a reprint edition of Claude Joseph de Ferriere’s 1787 two-volume Dictionnaire de Droit et de Pratique.

Tara Wallace was named Columbian College for Arts and Sciences associate dean for graduate studies. Wallace has taught in the English Department at GW for two decades and was appointed director of graduate studies in 2006.

Publications

Kathryn E. Newcomer, associate director of the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, and James Edward Kee, professor of public policy and public administration, published Transforming Public and Nonprofit Organizations: Stewardship for Leading Change.
