Rare 19th-Century Flag Exhibit at Brady Art Gallery, Sept. 10-27
An exhibition at GW’s Luther W. Brady Art Gallery reveals there often used to be more than just stars and stripes on the American flag.
Before Congress outlawed the use of text or portraits on official United States insignia in 1905, flags were commonly used as backdrops for campaign advertisements. A collection of 19th-century political campaign flags featuring the faces, names, and platform slogans of presidential candidates will be on display in the exhibition Stars and Stripes: The Political Flag Collection of Mark and Rosalind Shenkman, Sept. 10-27.
Featured flags display the images not only of candidates, including Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland, but also of a raccoon, the moon, and a log cabin, among others. A special discussion about the exhibition with Mark Shenkman, M.B.A. ’67, will be held at the gallery during GW’s Alumni Weekend from 10 a.m. - noon, Saturday, Sept. 27.
