Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements:

Kenneth Louis Becker, director of the Division of Endocrinology at GW’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences and professor of medicine, received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Endocrine Society at its national meeting in Toronto.

Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, gave a lecture called “A Trip to Mount Kurama: the Chinese-Language Poetry of Taiga” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the “Scholars’ Days” in conjunction with the exhibition Japanese Masters of the Brush: Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran on June 12.

Kennerly Digges, research professor of engineering and applied science and director of vehicle safety and biomechanics at the Federal Highway Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National Crash Analysis Center, was the recipient of SAE International’s Ralph H. Isbrandt Automotive Safety Engineering Award at the 2007 Government/Industry Meeting in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes the most outstanding paper at an SAE International meeting on the subject of automotive safety engineering.

Amitai Etzioni, University professor and professor of international affairs, testified before the Iraq Commission in London, lectured at the Royal Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce in London, and presented a paper on federalism at the UN Reform Conference hosted by the Centre for Studies on Federalism in Turin, Italy. He also moderated a discussion on a security plan for Iraq in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. In addition, Etzioni published the article “The Syrian Poison Capsule” in Ha’aretz Daily and “Sicherheit zuerst” in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

GW’s College of Professional Studies Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Corporate Compliance program received a national Healthcare Compliance and Ethics Award from the Healthcare Compliance Certification Board at the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics’ Annual International Compliance Awards Banquet in Chicago. The award recognizes leaders in the compliance field that exemplify professional integrity and strengthen the profession.

Valentina Harizanov, professor of mathematics, gave the plenary address, “Back and Forth Through Computable Model Theory,” at the Association of Symbolic Logic’s Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans.
Loring Ingraham, deputy director of the Doctor of Psychology Program and professor of clinical psychology, gave an invited lecture called “Schizophrenia Research and the Science of Clinical Psychology” at the Association of Psychological Science’s 19th annual convention on May 26.

Kristin Lamoureux, director of the International Institute of Tourism Studies, was quoted in a Time magazine article titled “Vacationing like Brangelina.”

Tjai Nielsen, assistant professor of management, published two journal articles this year: “Quantifying the ‘Softer Side’ of Management Education: An Example Using Teamwork Competencies” (co-authored with Terry Halfhill) in the Journal of Management Education and “Building Organizational Integrity” (co-authored with Chris Kayes and David Stirling) in Business Horizons. In addition, Nielsen published a book chapter, “Team Wisdom: Definition, Dynamics, and Applications,” with Amy Edmondson and Eric Sundstrom.

Amb. Ronald D. Palmer, emeritus professor of the practice of international affairs, was awarded the Pioneer Black Award by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice on March 1. Palmer also was the final presenter on “Malaysian Regionalism” at Ohio University on May 12. In addition, Palmer will publish a chapter called “Political Terrorism in West Africa” in Terrorism in Africa.

Vanessa Perry, assistant professor of marketing, was quoted in The New York Times article “Couples Learn the High Price of Easy Credit.”

Lawrence Singleton, associate professor of accountancy, presented “Accounting Treasure Hunt for HR Professionals” to the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management in Falls Church, Va., on May 22.

Kristin S. Williams, Ed.D. ’96, executive director for graduate student enrollment management, received the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals 2007 Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor conveyed by the association each year. Williams was presented the award at the association’s annual conference in Orlando.

Mona Zaghloul, professor of engineering and applied science and interim chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received a Doctor of Engineering honoris causa from the University of Waterloo in Canada, her alma mater, on June 16. The honorary degree recognizes her academic career and acknowledges her as the first female to receive a doctorate of engineering from the university. Zaghloul also delivered the keynote speech to the 2007 engineering graduates of University of Waterloo.

Appointments:

Dawnita Chandler Altieri, special assistant to the vice president for advancement, has been appointed administrator of operations for the president’s office.

John W. Kudless has been appointed associate vice president for principal gifts. Kudless joins GW after serving since 1999 as senior executive vice president and managing director of Grenzebach Glier and Associates. The Chicago-based company is one of the nation’s preeminent philanthropic management consulting firms serving higher education institutions and cultural organizations.

Barbara Porter, assistant vice president of media, marketing, and communications for the GW Medical Center, has been appointed GW President Steven Knapp’s chief of staff. Porter has been with the University since 1998 when she was director of public affairs and University spokeswoman. She joined the management team of the GW Medical Center in 2000, directing all communications, marketing, advertising, and special projects.

Adrienne A. Rulnick has been named associate vice president for alumni relations and annual giving in the Division of Development and Alumni Relations. Rulnick brings more than two decades of higher education experience to GW, including more than 15 years in alumni relations and development, most recently as executive director of university alumni relations and development at New York University.

Publications

Susan Aaronson, adjunct professor of strategic management and public policy, wrote an op-ed, “How to Bring Good Governance to Chinese Companies,” published in the Financial Times.

John Banzhaf, professor of law, was quoted in a variety of media outlets, including USA Today, WFTV-Orlando, and Medical News Today.

George Solomon, associate professor of management, published “An Examination of Entrepreneurship Education in the United States” in the Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development in May.

Refik Soyer, professor of decision sciences and statistics, published “Information Measures for Generalized Gamma Family” in the June 2007 issue of Journal of Econometrics. The article was co-authored by A. Dadpay and E.S. Soofi of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
