GW Makes a “Bond” Acquisition

University Names Beverly K. Bond Vice President For Advancement Effective Jan. 1

By Thomas Kohout

The University recently announced that Beverly K. Bond will become the new vice president for advancement, effective Jan. 1, 2002.

Bond comes to GW from Vanderbilt University where she served as vice chancellor for alumni and development. She was among the first women to hold a position that high at the Tennessee university. Bond brings more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit marketing, managing, and fundraising. At Vanderbilt she was responsible for development, alumni relations, and alumni publications for the university’s 10 schools, the medical center, and the hospital.

The graduate of the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management considers her role in the ‘Campaign for Vanderbilt” to be among her most valuable experiences. The six-year comprehensive campaign ran from 1990–95 and resulted in $560 million for the 323-acre Nashville school. For academic year 1999–2000 Vanderbilt ranked 19th in the nation in terms of endowment dollars with $2.3 billion.

Those skills will be helpful as GW’s own Centuries Campaign nears completion. The campaign, which reached 80 percent of the $500 million goal in its fifth year, is the impetus for much of the campus improvements such as the Media and Public Affairs building and the Health and Wellness Center.

“I find The George Washington University to be a truly distinctive institution and community,” Bond says. “Not only that, but its ongoing, remarkable progress is well-known. It will be an exciting privilege for me to help capitalize on the many opportunities to continue toward fullfilling GW’s great potential.”

Bond succeeds Michael Worth who stepped down as vice president for development on Aug. 31 to become a professor of non-profit management in the public affairs department. Worth joined the University in 1983, and has directed two comprehensive campaigns — the Campaign for George Washington which raised $85 million between 1985–90, and the ongoing Centuries Campaign.
