His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, prime minister of the State of Kuwait, received The George Washington University President’s Medal from President Steven Knapp on Sept. 18.

On Sept. 18, President Steven Knapp awarded His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, prime minister of the State of Kuwait, with the University’s President’s Medal in recognition of his professional achievements, commitment to the Kuwaiti people, and support of the University, including the endowment of the Chair for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Affairs, held by Amb. Edward W. Gnehm Jr., B.A. ’66, M.A. ’68. This was Dr. Knapp’s first President’s Medal ceremony.

“I wish to thank you for the support Kuwait has given to the Elliott School,” said Dr. Knapp. “We very much hope we can expand our ties and deepen our relationship in many ways.”

In his address, the prime minister discussed the long friend¬ship between the United States and Kuwait and urged students to visit his country. “As you venture out to pursue careers in international policies or economics, you will find that the world has grown smaller and more independent, and awareness of issues abroad has grown,” he said. “Most importantly, you have a chance to continue to solve problems and influence the direction the world is taking. No matter which field you pursue in international studies, I hope it will bring you to Kuwait, where you will be received warmly by the many friends you have here.”

The ceremony took place in 1957 E Street and was sponsored by the University’s Middle East Policy Forum, which brings leading scholars, analysts, journalists, diplomats, and policymakers to campus to discuss current and emerging issues in the region.

Established in 1988, GW’s President’s Medal is the highest honor conferred by the president of the University. Past recipients include Mikhail Gorbachev, Walter Cronkite, and Shimon Peres.
