Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements

John Banzhaf, professor of law, was quoted in a variety of media outlets, including NationalJournal.com and UPI.com, the Web site of the United Press International.

William Chambliss, professor of sociology, organized a workshop on state crime at the Onati International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Onati, Spain, in May. Presenters included scholars from the United States, Canada, England, Greece, New Zealand, and Germany. Chambliss also presented a paper at the workshop titled “International Drug Policies as State Crime?”

Peter F. Klaren, professor of history and international affairs, gave a talk at the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford University in May. His book, Nación y sociedad en la historia del Perú is scheduled for a third printing this fall by the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos.

Hope M. Harrison, director of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies and associate professor of history and international affairs, and Gregg Brazinsky, assistant professor of history and international affairs, led a group of seven history doctoral students on a trip to Shanghai July 26-30 for the first-ever Chinese-American Doctoral Forum on the Cold War.

Paul Reuther, visual resource specialist, is displaying his artwork at a solo exhibition, Northmen’s Place Made Southfolk’s Thing: Landscapes from Finland and Nova Scotia, until Oct. 31 at the Hillyer Art Space in Washington, D.C.

Publications

Bruce Dickson, professor of political science and international affairs, published Wealth into Power: The Communist Party’s Embrace of China’s Private Sector.

Frank X. Lee, associate professor of physics, and graduate student Lai Wang published an article titled “Octet baryon magnetic moments from QCD sum rules” in the July 2008 issue of Physical Review D, a publication of the American Physical Society.

Appointments

R. Edward Freeman, the Elis and Signe Olsson Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, has accepted a two-year appointment as a Welling Professor at the GW School of Business. Freeman will work with Tim Fort, executive director of the GW School of Business’ Institute for Corporate Responsibility, and lecture on ethics, global business, and leadership.
