Kalb Report Continues

USA Today Publisher Tom Curley Will Explore “Headlines and Bottom Lines” Nov. 12

By Greg Licamele

Following CBS News legend Dan Rather’s discussion at The National Press Club last month, USA Today President and Publisher Tom Curley will be among the guests at the next “Kalb Report” on Nov. 12, continuing the theme, “Journalism at the Crossroads.”

Speaking at the first edition of the “Kalb Report” this academic year, Rather discussed terrorism, journalism, and how the world has changed since Sept. 11. The discussion was moderated by Marvin Kalb before an overflowing crowd of GW students, faculty, and staff, along with industry professionals jammed into the National Press Club ballroom. The audience listened to Rather’s thoughts about so-called “patriotic journalism” and the rush to report news. “I’d rather be last than wrong and the first things you hear are usually wrong,” Rather said. He also cited economics as a major factor today when making journalism decisions, especially in smaller markets.

The Nov. 12 event with Curley, “American Newspapers: Headlines and Bottom Lines,” will begin at 8 pm in the Press Club Ballroom. Tickets are free and available at the Marvin Center Ticketmaster. The “Kalb Report” series is underwritten by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and co-sponsored by GW’s School of Media and Public Affairs, the Press Club, and the Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University.

The Knight Foundation was established in 1950 as a private foundation independent of the Knight brothers’ newspaper enterprises. It is dedicated to furthering their ideals of service to the community, to the highest standards of journalistic excellence, and to the defense of a free press.
