Gelman is Growing

Library Unveils “Wall of Honor” in Tribute to Those Who Helped GW’s Collection Pass the 2-Million Mark

University Librarian Jack Siggins declared libraries the “heart of academics” at ceremonies celebrating supporters and milestones of GW’s center of academics. The Gelman Library now has a permanent place of recognition with its “Wall of Honor” for donors to the GW library system. University President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg says that even as GW grows, the five libraries remain on the cutting edge, due in large part to the contributions of those whose names are now displayed on the wall, located near the Library entrance.

Immediately following that dedication on Oct. 19, the 2-millionth book was presented to the Gelman Library by James C. King, professor emeritus of German. The 1838 atlas of the United States represents a snapshot of America, including the original plans for DC. To mark the change in eras, “The Web of Science” was presented as the 2,000,001st “book.” The addition is an Internet database of citations that follows the trail of scholarly articles used in other publications.
