GW Community Gathers to
Give Back at Holiday Event

By Zach Kancher

The annual all-University holiday gathering, a staple of the GW community, will be held Dec. 18 in the Marvin Center, from 2–4:30 pm. Themed, “Celebrating Our Community,” the holiday gathering takes on a special meaning this year in the wake of the Sept. 11 events. As usual, food and entertainment will be provided, as will raffle drawings (prizes last year included airline tickets, stereos, and gift certificates). Greater emphasis, though, is being placed on the number of charitable activities the party will sponsor.

An addition to the charity lineup is the University-wide blood drive on Dec. 10, in the Marvin Center Ballroom from noon–8 pm, co-sponsored by the Marvin Center Governing Board and the Student Association.

A great success last year was the Marvin Center Governing Board/Student Association clothing drive. Making an encore appearance, donation boxes for the clothing will be placed in various locations around campus.

Other charitable activities include: Adopt-A-Family, which solicits gifts and donates them to families in need; Toys for Tots, the long-standing charitable drive run by the Marine Corps; the Faculty/Staff DC Scholarship Program, which raises funds for scholarships for students from DC schools; and a greeting card program that sends holiday greetings to GW hospital patients and residents of St. Mary’s Court. Holiday participants also may bring a can of food to the Dec. 18 event and be entered into a special prize drawing.

Volunteers are needed to help manage and steer the aforementioned activities. Those interested can contact Sandra Little, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, at 994-3620, or E-mail her at msdsll@gwumc.edu.
