Gelman Hosts Second Faculty Authors Reception

Four Authors Share Thoughts at Book Signing

By Brian Krause

Gelman Library held its second Faculty Authors Signing Reception of the semester Nov. 1, recognizing faculty members for their research and scholarly contributions to their area of study.

“This is a great opportunity for us to get together and focus on what we are here to do at this University — to educate,” says University Librarian Jack Siggins.

Among the faculty authors in attendance was University President and Professor of Public Administration Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, who discussed his latest book, “Reflections on Higher Education.” A collection of speeches and essays written between 1998 and 2001, “Reflections” addresses major issues in higher education, such as challenges facing university administrators, cultural influences, and town-and-gown relations.

“There is nothing that happens domestically or internationally that doesn’t impact what I do at the University,” says Trachtenberg. “Universities have clearly changed, and the university presidency has changed with it.”
Also recognized were James O. Horton, Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies, for his book “Hard Road to Freedom: The Story of African America”; Lawrence E. Mitchell, professor of law, for his book “Corporate Irresponsibility: America’s Newest Export”; and Andrew Zimmerman, assistant professor of history, for his book “Anthropology and Antihumanism in Imperial Germany.”

“It’s great to have the chance to do this at your home institution, for your family,” says Horton.

Faculty Authors Signing Receptions are held throughout the academic year and give Gelman librarians the opportunity to recognize new books written by faculty members. Authors sign copies of their books, which are then added to a collection of books written by GW faculty members in the University’s permanent archive.
