Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements

John Banzhaf, professor of law, was quoted in a variety of media outlets, including Examiner.com and Health Affairs magazine.

Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, spoke to the Greater Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Chinese American Librarians Association on “The Translation of Chinese Poetry—the Case of Zhang Ji (766-830).” Chaves was introduced by chapter president Jing Zhong, a librarian at GW’s Gelman Library.

Jonathan P. Deason, professor of environmental and energy management, delivered a keynote address on “Ethics and Socio-Environmental Responsibility” at the third Annual Seminar on Environmental Planning and Management in São Paulo, Brazil, on Oct. 6.

Peter Hotez, Walter G. Ross Professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine. Membership to the prestigious institution is granted on the basis of professional achievement and of demonstrated interest, concern, and involvement with problems and critical issues that affect the health of the public.

Jozef H. Przytycki, professor of mathematics, co-organized an international conference titled “Knots in Poland” and published three volumes of Proceedings in Fundamental Mathematicae.

Lisa Steinberg, senior education specialist, was awarded a research grant from the National Academic Advising Association.

Publications

Andrei Alexandru, assistant professorial lecturer in physics, along with collaborators Ivan Horvath and Keh-Fei Liu from the University of Kentucky, published the article “Classical limits of scalar and tensor gauge operators based on the overlap Dirac matrix” in the Oct. 15 issue of Physical Review D, a publication of the American Physical Society.

Howard Eisner, distinguished research professor and professor of engineering management, has had the third edition of his book Essentials of Project and Systems Engineering Management published in 2008.

Amitai Etzioni, University professor and professor of international affairs, has published numerous magazine and journal articles, including “A National Security Strategy for the Next Administration” in the September/October issue of Military Review.

Frederic R. Siegel, professor emeritus of geochemistry, published Demands of Expanding Populations and Development Planning - Clean Air, Safe Water, Fertile Soil in August.
