D.C. Zoning Commission Approves GW’s Proposal to Replace Pelham Hall

GW received unanimous approval on Sept. 17 from the D.C. Zoning Commission for its proposal to replace the existing Pelham Hall on GW’s Mount Vernon Campus with a new residence hall, which will include student support space. The approval will allow GW to move forward with its plans for construction of the new residence hall on the southwest quadrant of the Mount Vernon Campus.

The new structure replacing the current Pelham Hall will increase the number of student beds at that location from 78 to approximately 287 and provide student support space for meetings, dining, rehearsal, music and arts practice, and recreation. By providing additional student support space in the new Pelham building, the University will be able to transition space in buildings surrounding the campus quadrangle to academic uses.

The exterior design of the building will be consistent with the low-scale, red-brick style of the Mount Vernon Campus. The building also will incorporate a number of sustainable design elements and will achieve the equivalent of a minimum of 16 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points.

Filed with the D.C. Zoning Commission on April 6, the proposal was developed in close consultation with the surrounding residents. It reflects the University’s desire to achieve an appropriate balance of academic and student housing on the Mount Vernon Campus, enhancing the student experience while being attentive to community concerns.

GW’s Pelham Hall Replacement Project is the fourth major GW zoning proposal to be approved unanimously by the Zoning Commission in the past year. The others are the Foggy Bottom Campus Plan: 2006–2025, the D.C. Public Schools/GW School Without Walls joint Planned Unit Development, and the redevelopment of Square 54 (the old GW Hospital site) as a mixed-use “town center” with retail, residential, and office uses.
