Beth Nolan joins GW as vice president and general counsel Dec. 3.

Beth Nolan will join GW as vice president and general counsel effective Dec. 3. Nolan, a former GW law professor, served as counsel to the president of the United States from 1999 to 2001; she was the first woman to hold that position. Nolan currently is a partner at Crowell & Moring LLP, in the firm’s white collar and securities litigation group.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Beth back to GW as a member of my leadership team,” says President Steven Knapp. “Beth brings to the University an impressive record in government, private practice, and higher education. Having served as counsel to President Clinton and as a member of our GW Law School faculty, she knows the inner workings of both the University and Washington.” Knapp also thanked Bill Howard for his service as interim vice president and general counsel.

“The dynamic growth GW has been undergoing, and will surely continue to undergo, makes the university an exciting prospect for a lawyer who loves to grapple with complex legal problems,” says Nolan. At Crowell & Moring, Nolan’s federal and international practice includes strategic counseling, congressional investigations, internal investigations and compliance, government and legal ethics, federal election law, constitutional and public policy issues, and international claims.

While in the White House, Nolan was responsible for overseeing all legal matters for President Clinton and the White House staff. She served as deputy assistant attorney general from 1996 to 1999 in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel and was in the White House as associate counsel to the president from 1993 to 1995. She was an associate professor of law at GW’s Law School from 1985 to 1993 and 1995 to 1996. In addition, Nolan has served as a fellow in the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and as a member of the National Commission on Judicial Discipline and Removal.

Nolan is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation of the National Capital Area, and the Board of Advisors of the Harvard Law & Policy Review. Nolan has been recognized in The Best Lawyers In America 2008 in the areas of administrative law and commercial litigation. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Scripps College and her law degree magna cum laude from Georgetown University in 1980.
