GW's Guide To Happenings Throughout Metropolitan Washington

Wednesday / November 1– Saturday / December 23
Exhibition: Turning Wood into Art: A Gift from Jane and Arthur Mason to the Gelman Library. The exhibition showcases a recent gift of wooden artwork from the collection of Jane and Arthur Mason, which will eventually be permanently installed on the first floor of Gelman Library. The art currently is displayed in the cases outside the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery on the second floor of the Media and Public Affairs Building, 805 21st St. The building is open to the public Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.

Thursday / November 9– Saturday / January 27
Exhibition: The Franz and Virginia Bader Fund: The First Three Years.
Established in 2001 to provide grants to artists working within 150 miles of Washington, D.C., the Franz and Virginia Bader Fund has made awards to 10 artists to date. The first three years of recipients will be represented in this unprecedented exhibition at the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, located on the second floor of the Media and Public Affairs Building, 805 21st St. Free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Friday / November 10
International Development Forum: Post-Conflict Economic Investment: The Case of Afghanistan.
GW’s Center for International Business and Research, School of Public Policy and Public Administration, Center for the Study of Globalization, and Elliott School of International Affairs will host the sixth annual International Development Forum. The forum will include discussions on securing international investment and establishing a role for business organizations to facilitate development and reform as well as Afghan success stories. 5-7 p.m. 1957 E St., Room 213. $ Performance: Jazz Jamerata.
Featuring GW jazz students. 7-11 p.m.
in room HR 57 at 1610 14th St. Admission is $5.

$ Performance: Choral Concert: University Singers.
The concert will include soloists, piano, organ, harp, and percussion with the Choir of Men and Boys of St. Paul’s Church. 4 p.m. Western Presbyterian Church, 2401 Virginia Ave., NW. Admission is $10 per person/$5 for students and seniors.

$ Performance: Acoustic Africa.
Featuring Habib Koite from Mali, Vusi Mahlesela of South Africa, and Dobet Gnahore from Ivory Coast. Presented by Lisner Auditorium and Putumayo. 8 p.m. Lisner Auditorium. Tickets range from $25-$35 and are available at the Lisner Box Office, TicketMaster Outlets, or PhoneCharge at (301) 808-6900.

Exhibition: Time Spent: MFA Thesis Exhibition for Mandy Burrow.
GW graduate student Mandy Burrow explores issues of death, eternity, and the passage of time in everyday life. Dimock Gallery, lower level at 730 21st St. Free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and Fridays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Lecture: Peter Caws.
University Professor of Philosophy Peter Caws discusses “Reason and Hope: Knowledge, Belief, and

Thursday / November 16
Performance: University Symphonic Band.
GW Bands, led by conductor Bill Fritz, will perform in the Lisner Auditorium at 6 p.m. Free and open to the public.
Reading: The Jenny McKean Moore Reading Series presents acclaimed poets Carly Sachs and Anna Ziegler. Sachs teaches creative writing at GW and is the founder and co-curator of the Burlesque Poetry Hour at Bar Rouge in Washington, D.C. Ziegler’s play BFF will be produced this winter in New York. Free and open to the public. 8 p.m. in the Marvin Center Amphitheatre,
800 21st St., NW.

Thursday / November 16– Saturday / November 18
$ Performance: DanceWorks Fall 2006.
A semiannual modern dance concert featuring student dancers and choreography by GW students, faculty, and guest artist Juliette Mapp. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Dorothy Betts Marvin Theatre, 800 21st St., NW. Sunday / November 19
Performance: GW Orchestra Concert.
Led by conductor Nancia D’Alimonte, the GW Orchestra will perform Mozart’s “Magic Flute Overture,” Grundstrom’s “Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony Number 6.” Free and open to the public. 3 p.m. Lisner Auditorium.

Monday / November 20
Kalb Report.
