Farewell to a GW and NBA Legend

Arnold “Red” Auerbach, B.S. ’40, M.A. ’41, D.P.S. ’93
1917-2006

“If GW had a favorite son, it was Red Auerbach. The legend of basketball’s greatest coach began right here during Red’s time as a student and athlete. And his lifetime relationship with GW has left an indelible mark on the institution. He has been an inspiration to generations of scholar athletes and fans worldwide, but here in Foggy Bottom, we will always remember Red as one of our own. His integrity, passion, and will to win established a model in professional sports—and in life. And as a result, he will live on through the accomplishments of all of us whose lives he touched. We extend our condolences and love to his family.”
—President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg
