Acknowledgements
Diane M. Brewer, associate professor of speech and hearing, CCAS, presented “The Efficacy of Group Aural Rehabilitation Classes” at the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology Summer Institute (Vancouver, BC, June 2001).

Lynette Goldberg, associate professor of speech-language pathology, CCAS; Silvia Martinez, assistant professor of speech and hearing, CCAS; and Linda Bland-Stewart, assistant professor of speech and hearing, CCAS; have been awarded a University Facilitating Fund grant for their proposal, “Infants’ and Toddlers’ Use of Language Variations: An Acoustic Analysis of Acquisition and Developmental Patterns.” The project will examine the utterances of three groups of 6-to-18-month-old pre-verbal children as they interact with adults speaking African-American English (AAE), Spanish, and Standard American English (SAE).

Mercedes Hernandez, director of the Melzer Psychological Service Center, has been selected to participate in the National Hispana Leadership Institute 2002 Fellowship Program.

Murray H. Loew, professor of engineering, SEAS, was elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Aseem Prakash, assistant professor of strategic management and public policy, SBPM, was on the panel “Sustainable Consumption in a Globalizing World: Can it be Achieved? Will it Endure?,” organized by The World Bank in Washington, Feb. 27.

Charles Toftoy, associate professor of management science, SBPM, was selected for the Washington Business Journal’s “Book of Lists for 2002.” Selectees were honored at a reception at the Washington Hilton Feb. 4.

Akos Vertes, professor of chemistry, CCAS, was presented with the title “Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences” (Doctor Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae) by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This honorary title is higher than a PhD in Hungary. Currently, only 320 people hold this title in chemistry. At the same time, Vertes became a member of the General Assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Appointments
Frank Janicki was appointed evening circulation supervisor for Eckles Library at the Mt. Vernon Campus. Janicki comes to GW from Carnegie Mellon University.

Gail Kern Paster, professor of English, CCAS, has been named director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, the fifth in the library’s 70-year history. She takes office on July 1. Paster’s appointment was announced by the Trustees of Amherst College, who administer the Folger under the will of the library’s founder, Henry Clay Folger. She succeeds Werner Gundersheimer who retires after 18 years at the Folger Library.

Silvia Martinez, assistant professor of speech and hearing, CCAS, published “Guide to Speech-Language Pathology Assessment Tools for Multicultural and Bilingual Populations;” “Second Language Learners: ASHA Readings;” and “Advocating on Behalf of Bilingual Students,” in the newsletter of the ASHA Special Interest Division 16: School-Based Issues. v. 2, n.1, pp. 15–18. Also published was “Ethics and School-Based Issues,” in the newsletter of the ASHA Special Interest Division 16: School-Based Issues, v. 2, n 1, pp. 37–39. Martinez also co-wrote “Clinical Issues when Assessing African American Children: ASHA Readings,” with A. Grice.

Sheila Stager, adjunct professor of speech and hearing, CCAS; Steven Bielamowicz, of GW’s Voice and Treatment Center; and Joan Regnell, associate professor of speech and hearing, CCAS, co-wrote “Quantification of Static and Dynamic Supraglottic Activity,” Journal of Speech Language and Hearing Research, v. 44, n. 6.

Ryan Watkins, assistant professor of educational technology leadership, GSEHD, recently published, “Assessing and Evaluating: Differentiating Perspectives” in Performance Improvement, v. 41, n. 2, pp. 22–28.
