Airline Management Program
Cleared for Takeoff
Classes Conducted Near Dulles International Airport
By Matthew
Nehmer
Preparing managers to face
the challenge of todays airline industry is the focus of a new
Airline Management Certificate Program launched this semester by GWs
Aviation Institute. With classes meeting near Dulles International Airport,
the program is targeted to airline and airport managers, government
regulatory officials, consultants, labor union officials, vendor managers,
and those seeking entry into the airline and related industries.
Perhaps no industry is
more challenging, complex, and unpredictable than airline operations,
says Darryl Jenkins, director of the Aviation Institute. Therefore,
a new breed of airline managers must be better trained, smarter, and
more educated in the fundamentals of airline management, economics,
and day-to-day operations than ever before. Our program is the first
of its kind to focus on the challenges of this unique and constantly
evolving industry.
Jenkins joins a list of prominent
aviation leaders and experts who will serve as the programs faculty,
including Robert Baker, executive vice president for American Airlines;
Paul Mifsud, senior vice president for government affairs, KLM; Daniel
P. Kaplan, senior vice president at Glassman-Oliver Economic Consultants;
Michael Miller, editor-in-chief of Aviation Daily; and others.
The 18-credit hour program
comprises six graduate level courses: The History of the Deregulated
Airline Industry; Organization and Management of Airlines;
Hub and Spoke Operations; Advanced Airline Economics;
E-Marketing and Commerce; and Customer Service.
The program is designed to be completed in 12 months but students can
take up to three years. Each course is taught on Fridays from 10 am
to 5 pm, and credits earned may count as electives in GWs MBA
program or master of tourism administration program.
The Aviation Institute is an
interdisciplinary, collaborative effort established by three institutes
within The George Washington University: the GW Transportation Research
Institute, the International Institute of Tourism Studies, and the Institute
for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management. The GW Aviation Institute
is the first attempt by a major university in the United States to combine
the efforts of federal, state, and local government within industry
and academia to promote a comprehensive approach to safety and security
issues facing the aviation industry in the new millennium.
