U.S. representatives from across the aisle came together for a debate at GW’s Jack Morton Auditorium on Feb. 25. Titled “How Can America Foster Economic Growth and Opportunity?” the forum was the first installment of Congress Debates, a new bipartisan series focusing on important issues facing the nation.

The debate was hosted by the House Democratic Caucus and the House Republican Conference, in cooperation with the Democratic Leadership Council and the Congressional Institute, and moderated by National Journal and former Los Angeles Times columnist Ron Brownstein.

Participants included Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), B.A. ’85; Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), B.A. ’81; Rep. Robert E. Andrews (D-N.J.); Rep. Artur Davis (D-Ala.); Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.); Rep. Adam Putnam (R-Fla.); Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.); and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

During the debate, the representatives discussed reforming the health care system, creating new energy policy, improving the nation’s educational standards, and decreasing the country’s dependence on foreign oil. They also answered questions from Brownstein and the audience.

Putnam told the audience that he hoped the series inspired thought and debate about the nation’s current and future economic challenges. “We are setting a tone and expectation that I hope is contagious,” said Putnam. “These are issues that will affect you and your generation.”
