Tuition Benefits Primer

Regular full-time and part-time staff are eligible for tuition benefits the first semester following the first 90 days of successful employment. The waiting period must be completed before the first day of the academic semester in order to receive benefits for that semester.

Application forms for tuition benefits are available online at www.gwu.edu/~hrs/benefits/tuition. Deadlines are Nov. 1 for the fall semester, March 1 for the spring semester, and July 1 for the summer semester.
Tuition benefits apply to tuition only, not additional course fees. Tuition benefits received for graduate level courses that exceed $5,250 during the calendar year are subject to taxation, unless the employee provides documentation that courses are job-related. This exclusion and exception does not apply to spouses and dependents; their full graduate-level benefit is subject to taxation.

The maximum benefit cannot exceed three times the current Columbian College of Arts and Sciences hourly credit rate. Executive graduate programs, doctoral programs in clinical psychology, and medical doctor degrees within the School of Medicine and Health Sciences are excluded from the tuition benefit program. Benefits for the Juris Doctor degree are remitted at the graduate level as defined in the employee handbook, not at the doctoral level.

For more information on how to take advantage of tuition benefits, contact Daniel Warwick, senior benefits specialist, at (202) 994-9623 or dwarwick@gwu.edu.
