Acknowledgements
Peter Caws, University Professor of Philosophy, discussed “Lesser Evils and Greater Goods,” at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, on April 10, and later in the month discussed, “Psychoanalysis as the Idiosyncratic Science of the Individual Subject,” at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, on April 26.

Carol H. Hoare, professor of human development and human resource development, delivered the commencement address and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities at Carlow College on May 11, 2002.

Raymond L. Pickholtz, professor of engineering and applied science, SEAS, was named co-editor in chief of the Journal of Communications and Networks starting in January 2002. The journal, a publication of the Korean Institute of Communications Sciences and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), is an international archival quarterly dedicated to technical aspects of Telecommunications and Computer Networks.

Aseem Prakash, assistant professor of strategic management and public policy, SBPM, attended an invitation-only workshop exploring empirical and theoretical issues regarding the interaction of regulation and corporate environmental management convened by the Center for the Study of Law and Society (directed by Robert Kagan), University of California-Berkeley on June 4. Prakash also has been invited to attend a workshop on Social Funds, June 10–11, sponsored by the World Bank’s Operations Evaluation Department and the World Bank Institute.

Sheryl Spivack, associate professor of tourism, testified on May 2 in a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Her presentation was titled “Protecting US Citizens Abroad From Terrorism.”

Ryan Watkins, assistant professor of educational technology leadership, GSEHD, presented a lecture entitled “Essential Perspectives on E-learning” at the 40th annual conference of the International Society for Performance Improvement.


Awards
Mary H. Futrell, dean, GSEHD, received the David G. Imig Award for Distinguished Achievement in Teacher Education at the 54th annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

GW Hatchet received seven awards in the Society of Professional Journalism’s Region Two Mark of Excellence competition. The awards cover 2001 student media. The GW Hatchet staff took home first place in General News Photography, Grant Wernick; Feature Photography, Michael Itti; and Online News reporting, Jason Steinhardt, Jason Safdie, and Kate Stepan. Wernick also received a second place award, with Itti taking third, for Spot News Photography. Itti also earned third place for Sports Photography. Drew Holland received third place recognition for General Column Writing.

Steve Peterson, head coach for rowing, has been selected as one of seven people serving four-year terms on the US Rowing Association Board of Directors High Performance Committee.

Russ Rizzo, CCAS BA ’02 cum laude, former GW Hatchet editor in chief, received the 2002 Pulliam Journalism Fellowship. The award consists of a $6,000 grant and 10 weeks of work and study at The Indianapolis Star where Rizzo will cover business and economics.


Publications
Howard Eisner, distinguished research professor, SEAS, published “Reengineering Yourself and Your Company: From Engineer to Manager to Leader,” (Artech House Publishers, Boston, MA).

Gregory D. Squires, professor of sociology, CCAS, published Urban Sprawl: Causes, Consequences, and Policy Responses (Urban Institute Press 2002). The book focuses on a range of equity issues including the linkages between concentrated poverty and uneven metropolitan development. Jeffrey R. Henig, professor of political science, CCAS, contributed to the project.

Jiawen Yang, associate professor of international business, published, “Direct and Financial Foreign Investment: How Do They Differ in Benefits to Developing Countries?” The working paper was supported by the Institute for Global Management and Research (IGMR).
