Desmond Tutu Among Honorees at GW Cancer Institute Gala
Archbishop Emeritus and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and four other activists were honored for their public service at the fifth annual GW Cancer Institute Gala, held in the National Building Museum on May 3. Proceeds from the annual black-tie event fund cancer programs in the Washington metro area. During the gala’s awards ceremony, Tutu received the Cancer Compassion Award; Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for Cancer Research Margaret Foti received the Distinguished Public Service Award; two-time cancer survivor and founder of the CancerClimber Association Sean Swarner received the Spirit of Life Award; and Robert Siegel, director of GW’s Division of Hematology and Oncology, and GW oncology nurse Paula Siegel received the Commitment to Overcoming Cancer Award. NBC4 news anchor and health reporter Doreen Gentzler emceed the event, which included a silent auction and entertainment from Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Oleta Adams. President Steven Knapp and Provost and Vice President for Health Affairs John F. Williams served as hosts for the evening, while Diane Robinson Knapp and GW Hospital Associate Administrator Kimberly D. Russo were the gala co-chairs. The gala was made possible with the support of principal benefactors Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen and Bernard and Mildred Katzen. “This year’s Cancer Institute Gala was a wonderful success,” says Executive Director of the GW Cancer Institute Steven Patierno. “It was an honor to recognize such worthy individuals for their dedication to the fight against cancer. Our commitment to cancer research and eliminating the cancer disparities in the District is made possible by those who support the institute and the gala.”
