GW’s Guide To Happenings On Campus

Free prostate cancer screening. Each Friday, the GW Cancer Institute offers free prostate cancer screenings. Included is a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test and digital rectal exam. Prostate tests are suggested for all men age 50 and older and African American men age 40 and older. To schedule a free prostate cancer screening, call (202) 741-3106. 8:30–11 a.m. by appointment. Thursday / June 12
Colonial Community Book Swap. Trade in your old books and magazines for new ones at Colonial Community’s semi-annual Staff and Faculty Book Swap. Kogan Plaza (rain site: Columbian Square). Book drop-off 9-11:30 a.m.; book pick-up 12-2 p.m.

Friday / June 20
$    Performance: Salif Keita. Known as the “Golden Voice of Mali,” Salif Keita is an internationally recognized afro-pop singer and songwriter who successfully blends traditional West African music styles with Arabic, French, and Spanish traditions. 8 p.m. Lisner Auditorium, 21st and H streets, NW.

Sunday / June 22
$    Performance: Gilberto Gil & the Broadband Band. In a career spanning four decades, Brazilian musician and environmental activist Gilberto Gil has sold more than five million albums. 8 p.m. Lisner Auditorium, 21st and H streets, NW.

Through July 3
Exhibition: “Hail to the Buff and Blue: Selections from the Permanent Collection.” A school-spirited exhibition of works from the permanent collection of the University including work by Botero, De Looper, Fehrenbach, Harrop, and Vasarely. Luther W. Brady Gallery. 805 21st St., NW, 2nd Floor. Open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Films on The Vern 2008: ‘Going for the Gold’
In the Olympic spirit, Films on The Vern showcases sports and athletes in its annual film series this summer.

Movies will be shown Wednesday nights, July 16 through Aug. 20, at 8:30 p.m. on the Mount Vernon Campus Quad, with the exception of the last film, which will be shown at the outdoor pool on the Mount Vernon Campus. (Rain location for all dates is the Eckles Library Auditorium, also on the Mount Vernon Campus.)

July 16: Cars
This animated feature from Pixar follows Lightning McQueen, a hot-shot stock car heading to “the big race.” Voices by Paul Newman, Richard Petty, Bonnie Hunt, and Owen Wilson. Rated G; 96 minutes.

July 23: Miracle
The story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, which stunned the heavily favored Soviet squad to advance to the championship. Starring Kurt Russell, Patricia Clarkson, Noah Emmerich, and Eddie Cahill. Rated PG; 130 minutes.

July 30: Cinderella Man
The film focuses on legendary boxer Jim Braddock, who after an amazing and unlikely win, was dubbed the “Cinderella Man” and went on to become the heavyweight boxing champ. Starring Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Craig Bierko, and Paul Giamatti. Rated PG-13; 144 minutes.

August 6: Remember the Titans
The movie depicts the real-life story of an Alexandria, Va., high school football team in the aftermath of school integration in 1971. Starring Denzel Washington, Will Patton, and Donald Faison. Rated PG; 108 minutes.

August 13: A League of Their Own
The film tells the story of the first all-women’s baseball league formed during World War II with teammates ranging from a former dance hall hostess to a home run slugger to a couple of farmer’s daughters. Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, and Bill Pullman. Rated PG; 128 minutes.

August 20: Cool Runnings
Based on the true story of four Jamaican athletes going to extremes to compete as Olympic bobsled racers. The film will be shown at the GW outdoor pool on the Mount Vernon Campus. Starring John Candy. Rated PG; 97 minutes.
