Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements

An all-GW team representing the Mid-Atlantic region came in second place in the finals of the World Geography Bowl Championship held April 18 in San Francisco. Team captain, Wesley Reisser, won the Most Valuable Player award given to the player with the highest average score per round.

John Banzhaf, professor of law, was interviewed for a TV14-Carolina news segment titled “Who’s to Blame for the Overweight Epidemic?”

Dennis H. Blumer, former GW vice president and general counsel, has been named vice president emeritus by the Board of Trustees. Blumer spent 12 years as the University’s first vice president and general counsel. The appointment was effective retroactively, beginning Jan. 31, the date of Blumer’s retirement from the University.

Mark Feldstein, associate professor of media and public affairs, recently spoke about journalistic subpoenas at the annual American Bar Association conference on communications law in Key Largo, Fla.; media coverage of the Iraq war at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City; investigative reporting and confidential sources at American University; and defending the First Amendment at the National Press Club. In the past year, he has been quoted by, among others, The New York Times, Washington Post, PBS, NPR, History Channel, Al Jazeera, FOX News, Associated Press, National Journal, and Los Angeles Times.

Donna Lind Infeld, professor of public policy and public administration, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach at Renmin University in Beijing, China, for the fall 2007 semester.

Edward McCord, associate professor of history and international affairs, received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Marian College. McCord graduated from Marian College in 1973.

Gilda Oran, clinical associate professor, received the Louis Hillson Memorial Award for distinguished leadership and commitment to Jewish education at Hebrew College’s commencement on June 3 in Newton, Mass.

David J. Silverman, assistant professor of history, was selected as one of the "Top Young Historians" by the History News Network.

Stephen C. Smith, professor of economics and international affairs, made an invited presentation to the United Nations Economic and Social Council Meeting “Eradicating Poverty and Hunger – Joining Forces to Make It Happen” at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. The presentation was titled “The Millennium Development Goals and the Struggle Against Poverty Traps.”

Gregory Squires, chair of the Department of Sociology, received the 2007 Stuart A. Rice Merit Award for Career Achievement from the District of Columbia Sociological Society.

Publications

Elizabeth A. Fisher, professor of classics, published an article, "Manuel Holobolos, Alfred of Sareshal, and the Greek Translator of Aristotle's De plantis," in Classical et Mediaevalia.

Valentina Harizanov, professor of mathematics, co-published “Index sets of computable structures,” with Wesley Calvert, Julia Knight, and Sara Miller, in Algebra and Logic.

Kathryn Newcomer, director of the School of Public Policy and Public Administration, gave a speech, "La Certeza de la incertidumbre en la gestion pulbica alrededor del mundo," at the La Conferencia Anual Internacional de Red Interamerican en Education in Bogota, Colombia, May 2-5, where she also represented the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, of which she serves as president.
