GW Friends Fete President and Mrs. Trachtenberg

More than 500 GW supporters and friends filled the ballroom at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on May 17 to honor President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and his wife, Francine Zorn Trachtenberg.

Veteran journalists Steve and Cokie Roberts served as masters of ceremony. Two senators, a former mayor of Washington, the president emeritus of Boston University, and the current president of Georgetown University, as well as a dozen other speakers toasted—and gently roasted—President Trachtenberg.

Renowned sculptor John Safer presented the Trachtenbergs with one of his pieces, aptly named Promise. The evening ended with a surprise: the announcement of the newly named Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration (see related story, page 1).
