GW's Guide To Happenings Throughout Metropolitan Washington

May 9–July 13

Exhibition: ColorField.remix This city-wide event features works of artists such
as Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, Howard Mehring, Alma Thomas, and Willem DeLooper, and will build on the 1984 exhibition Generations of the Washington Color School by adding significant new acquisitions and loans of never-before-seen works by New York artist Rosette Bakish, who studied with Robert Motherwell; local artist Amy Lin; and a pivotal new addition to the GW Permanent Collection by DeLooper. Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, Media and Public Affairs Building, 805 21st Street, NW. Tuesday– Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Saturday / May 12

Green Carnival Recycle books and paper, donate food (nonperishable and unopened), properly dispose of electronic waste, such as old electronic devices and printer cartridges, and hazardous waste, including chemicals, cleaning supplies, and batteries. Music, food, and fun! 10 a.m.–5 p.m. University Yard. (Rain location is the Marvin Center.) Salvation Army Clothing Drive Donate clothing, shoes, and household items. 10 a.m.–6 p.m. University Yard.

$ Fourth East Coast Dance Competition Culture Shock Washington, D.C., in
conjunction with GW’s Philippine Cultural Society presents the fourth annual Culture Shock East Coast Dance Competition. This event features pre-selected amateur and collegiate dance teams from all over the East Coast, competing in a full concert-format show. Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St., NW. $ Performance: Azerbaijani Mugham This performance features the traditional Azerbaijani musical style known as mugham, performed by a kamancha player, tar player, and gaval, daf and tumbak percussionist. Proceeds from the concert will benefit children living in refugee camps in Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan Trade and Culture Center’s concert fund. Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St., NW. $ Performance: Angélique Kidjo Angélique Kidjo blends the tribal and pop rhythms of her West African homeland with funk, salsa, jazz, rumba, souk, and makossa.
