Honoring Senior Men and Women Colonials

By Frank Broomell

Athletes work hard all season in order to achieve success for their teams. At the Senior Honors Luncheon on May 8 GW recognized their work and dedication. This luncheon honors all seniors participating in GW athletics, as well as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) from each team, the team with the highest team GPA, and several other individual awards. These individual awards include the J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award and the Lynn George Outstanding Senior Woman Athlete Award.

The former went to senior Brian Carroll of the men’s golf team. Carroll ranks in the top five in several GW golf career categories, and last season was named the A-10’s Student Athlete of the Year for golf. He also was named the golf team’s MVP for the third time at the luncheon.

The women’s award went to swimmer Maggie Moss. Moss holds three GW records for individual events, the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke, and the 200-yard individual medley and also is a member of GW’s record-holding 400-yard medley relay team. She has received A-10 All-Conference first team honors three times and last winter competed against US Olympic swimmers and other international elites at the 2005 US Open.

The Senior Male and Senior Female Athlete Academic awards went to men’s rower Mark Pepple and softball player Elana Meyers. The top two academic teams were men’s squash and women’s cross country.

The men’s basketball team honored Omar Williams as the MVP for the past season. The Colonials went 27-3 and posted a perfect 16-0 record in the A-10 Conference. GW received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and in a dramatic comeback victory, GW defeated UNC Wilmington for the Colonials’ first NCAA win since 1994 before falling to the top-ranked Duke in the second round.
