Retired Navy Capt. to Lead
Crisis and Emergency Plans
John Petrie, retired Navy Capt. and former commanding
officer for the Naval Station Norfolk, the worlds largest naval
complex, has been named assistant vice president for public safety and
emergency management, a new position to coordinate and execute the Universitys
crisis management and emergency preparedness plans.
GW has taken what we believe to be an unprecedented
step within higher education in creating a full-time position of this
sort, says Vice President for Communications Michael Freedman.
It speaks to the seriousness with which the University takes the
safety and well being of our community.
Petrie brings more than 20 years of a stunning combination
of credentials to the position, most recently serving as executive director
of the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel. In addition to his
expertise in crisis management, Petrie has distinguished himself in
military leadership, management, and higher education.
Reporting to Louis Katz, vice president and treasurer,
Petrie also will work with President Trachtenberg and the appropriate
vice presidents in the decision-making processes regarding classes and
events. Ultimately, he will be the person the administration turns to
for advice, counsel, and leadership in the planning and execution of
emergency management practices.
