Hannaford Tapped as SMPA Shapiro Fellow
Peter Hannaford, former President Ronald Reagans
campaign adviser, current senior consultant to APCO Worldwide, and president
of Hannaford Enterprises, Inc., joins GW this semester as the SMPA Shapiro
Fellow. Hannaford will offer a series of brown bag discussions centered
around current public affairs issues such as, Osama 13th-Century
War; 21st-Century Communications, English for Flacks,
and Politics 2002: New Civility?
Hannaford assisted former President
Reagan in his quest for the White House by first serving as director
of issues and research during the 1976 presidential primaries and then
as Reagans senior communications adviser in 1980. Earlier in his
career he spent 17 years in public relations and advertising in the
San Francisco area.
Tax Changes Set for Tuition Benefits
Beginning this semester, tax-free tuition remission
for employees will be expanded to include graduate courses. Up to $5,250
per year (not per semester) in graduate-level tuition remission will
be exempt from taxation. Amounts above $5,250 may be excluded if the
coursework is approved as work-related. The University also is required
to continue to tax the full cost of graduate courses taken by spouses
and dependent children through the tuition remission program. Undergraduate
tuition remains completely tax-exempt for employees, spouses, and dependent

Pre-tax Transportation Benefit Increases
All regular full-time and part-time faculty and
staff members are now eligible for an increase in pre-tax transportation
benefits up to $100. Payroll deductions now can be $40, $60, or $100
per month. Enrollment forms and more information are available from
Payroll Services, Academic Center, Rome Hall 101.
