January 2008 Geology’s Tollo Named D.C. Professor of the Year
Seventh GW Professor Honored by CASE GW Associate Professor of Geology Richard Tollo was named the 2007 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching District of Columbia Professor of the Year. This marks the third consecutive year and seventh time overall that a GW faculty member has won the award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). “I consider myself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to teach and work with students at The George Washington University,” says Tollo. “I learned long ago that students, especially those at the undergraduate level, where inquisitiveness and enthusiasm are natural commodities, provide a constant source of motivation for me to improve and expand what I do each day. It is a privilege to participate in their education and in some small way contribute to the path they choose to follow in life.” Tollo has been a member of the GW faculty for nearly 25 years and currently teaches undergraduate courses in geology. His primary research interests include the petrogenesis of granitic magmatic systems and the relation of igneous and metamorphic petrogenetic processes to tectonics. He recently was the lead editor of a memoir published by the Geological Society of America concerning the tectonic evolution of the Precambrian Grenville mountain belt in North America. “GW has a long tradition of dedication to teaching,” says Donald R. Lehman, executive vice president for academic affairs. “I am pleased that CASE and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching have again recognized one of our faculty members. Several years ago, GW honored Richard Tollo for excellence in pedagogy with the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize in Teaching. It is gratifying that he has achieved national recognition.” Established in 1981, the CASE Professor of the Year program recognizes undergraduate professors for extraordinary dedication, as demonstrated by impact on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching and learning; contribution to undergraduate education in the institution, community, and profession; and support from colleagues and current and former undergraduate students. GW professors who have received the CASE D.C. Professor of the Year award previously include Jarol Manheim, professor of media and public affairs and of political science; James O. Horton, Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies and History; Gerald Feldman, associate professor of physics; James A. Miller, professor of English and American studies; Matthew O’Gara, associate professorial lecturer of honors; and Elizabeth Chacko, associate professor of geography.
