George Washington’s Annual Birthday Bonfire, Apple Day, Commencement, Alumni Weekend, GW’s Holiday Party, Colonials Weekend—all of these events share spirit and celebrate our sense of community and tradition at The George Washington University.

Faculty and staff generosity is another thriving tradition at GW. Throughout the years, faculty and staff members have demonstrated their commitment to the University by making gifts to the Stephen Joel Trachtenberg D.C. Scholarship Fund, as well as to particular programs and departments. Many employees also donated their time, volunteering for various projects across campus and in the metro area.

This year, the University hopes to garner support in a new and special way—by building upon the tradition of giving at GW. A new Faculty and Staff Campaign will kick off on Jan. 17 with a party in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom from 4 to 6 p.m., recognizing the employee giving legacy and relaunching the campaign.

The Faculty and Staff Leadership Committee steers the campaign, working to give all faculty and staff a voice and unite everyone around this new tradition. The 2008 committee includes Frank Demes, M.F.A. ’94, assistant chief of the University Police Department; Leslie Jacobson, professor of theatre; Fred Siegel, associate vice president and dean of freshmen; and Mike Tapscott, director of the Multicultural Student Services Center.

“I’m an alumnus, but you don’t have to be a GW graduate to give,” says Demes. “The Faculty and Staff Campaign provides another opportunity to show my dedication to the University’s mission and to support the students and colleagues who I work with day in and day out.”

Demes is one of the more than 2,600 faculty and staff who also are GW alumni—approximately one in three University employees. Many other faculty and staff members have additional Colonials connections, including children, spouses, or other family and friends who attended GW.

“Participation in the campaign—no matter the size of the gift—is crucial,” adds Jacobson, the parent of a GW student. “Unified giving enhances the student experience at GW, supports faculty and staff development, and shows our faith in the University.”

Faculty and staff make direct donations to their area of interest, such as their own department, scholarships, athletics, libraries, the President’s Fund for Excellence, or to the hundreds of other programs on campus. Employees may choose to make a one-time gift or use the payroll deduction option.

Any faculty and staff member who makes a gift will be recognized in GW’s annual Report on Philanthropy and entered into a drawing for complimentary dance lessons, meals, tickets to athletic events, and more. Those who contribute between $1,000 and $24,999 become members of the University’s oldest giving society, the Luther Rice Society, and receive a variety of benefits, including exclusive receptions and events.

Pledge cards were recently mailed to all faculty and staff. For more information about the Faculty and Staff Campaign, visit www.development.gwu.edu/giving/facultystaff or contact Carissa Ciuca, director of the GW Annual Fund at (202) 994-9144 or cciuca@gwu.edu.
