Winter Weather Policy Reminder

When Washington has its first hard frost of the season it can mean one thing — inclement weather could be only a seven-day forecast away. When the skies turn gray and the sleet and snow start to fall, University officials encourage faculty and staff to check the University’s status through the information line (202/994-5050) or via the “Campus Advisories” link on the front page of the GW Web site, www.gwu.edu. Information on the 5050 line and the Web site applies to University employees and students in the DC metropolitan area, including those at the Mount Vernon Campus. Information for employees and students at the Virginia Campus is available by calling 703/726-8333.

Notification of delayed openings or closures still will be broadcast on local television channels (4, 5, 7, 8, and 9) and radio stations (WTOP, 103.5 FM; WMAL, 630 AM; and WAMU, 88.5 FM). These stations, however, may sometimes list GW as closed when only classes have been canceled, but offices are still open. Please visit Campus Advisories or call 202/994-5050 for the University announcement.

The Medical Center has emergency plans specifically for its units. Employees unfamiliar with these plans should consult their supervisor. Those who must report to work during inclement weather or emergency conditions will be designated by their supervisor. On the Web site and the 5050 line, they will be referred to as “designated employees.” Medical Center notices are available at www.gwumc.edu or call 202/994-3501.

Liberal leave implementation means that regular employees may use annual leave without advance notice or supervisory approval. Those without annual leave will be granted a leave without pay.
